Graham was very helpful in talking through the ways we could accomplish the job of replacing an old heatilator with a new wood stove. After we finish the demo and build out a heat shield, we'll be having the folks at Tristan's back to install a new chimney and hook up the stove. This is our second install with them, and we've been very happy with the work.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ember Keepers Chimney and Fireplace
Why do I need to have my chimney professionally cleaned?
Whether you burn wood or fire logs, flammable particles are created and carried up with the smoke. These particles can settle along your chimney liner and cause a chimney fire, which can easily spread to other areas of your home through cracks in the liner. We recommend as well as the national fire protection association an annual inspection
What is causing my fireplace to smoke and what should I do about it?
If your fireplace is smoking, check for these things:
Creosote buildup in the flue and on the cap, animals and nesting materials, or other flue blockages. The best way to handle these things is to have your chimney professionally cleaned.
Why is my fireplace stinky and what can I do?
Most chimney odor problems are a result of creosote paired with humidity. The simple solution is to have your chimney cleaned and waterproofed. Be sure to have your chimney checked for leaks as well and ask about a top-mounted damper.
What should I do if I have a chimney fire?
If you have a chimney fire, call the fire department and evacuate your home. Do not use your chimney and fireplace until it has been professionally inspected and cleared for use.
How often should I have my chimney checked?
The NFPA recommends that you get your chimney inspected annually, and swept as needed.
Should I do anything before my chimney sweep appointment?
Have decorations and valuables removed from the hearth area or from around the floor directly in front of and to the sides of the fireplace, before your certified sweep arrives. Also please refrain from having a wood fire for at least 24 hours prior.
How long does a chimney sweep appointment last?
The process can usually take an hour to an hour and a half.
If my chimney doesn't meet the current standard, can't I just put a gas log set in it?
Gas logs are not a repair system. The firebox and venting system must still meet the standards set by the manufacture of the log set as well as the NFPA 211.
Why is it important to have my chimney professionally cleaned?
Professional chimney cleaning removes flammable creosote buildup that can cause chimney fires and spread to your home. Annual inspections and cleanings are recommended for safety.
What causes my fireplace to smoke and how can I fix it?
Smoke can be caused by creosote buildup, animals, or flue blockages. The best solution is to have your chimney professionally cleaned to remove these obstructions.
What should I do if my fireplace smells bad?
Bad odors usually come from creosote combined with humidity. Cleaning, waterproofing, leak checking, and installing a top-mounted damper can solve the problem.
How should I respond to a chimney fire?
Call the fire department immediately and evacuate your home. Do not use the chimney or fireplace until it has been inspected and cleared by a professional.
