I would like to start by saying that I’ve been a very happy, on-and-off Planet Fitness member for the past four years. I’ve encountered a few grumpy employees here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary—until recently. I’m not someone who complains about employees, because I understand people can have bad days. However, when my safety is put at risk, I do have an issue.
Today I visited the Onalaska/La Crosse Planet Fitness location to tan. I immediately noticed an employee who has made me uncomfortable in the past. I believe he may have been training another gentleman today. I greeted him politely with a “hello,” and again received the same cold, ego-heavy attitude I’ve experienced from him before. Not a big deal, not every day is a good day.
After scanning my membership, I asked for a lay-down tanning bed for 7 minutes. He sighed, looked at me, and said, “It’s going to be a minute or two.” I told him that was fine. He sighed again, clearly irritated, and said, “Well, if I’m still here I’ll be able to get you set up with one.” An odd response, but I just nodded and went to the waiting area.
A few minutes later, he came in and asked how long I wanted again. I clearly said seven minutes. He replied, word for word, “Okay, bed 3 will be ready for 7 minutes in a minute.” I continued to wait until he told me I was good to go.
When I walked to the room, I noticed all the beds after #3 were completely open—not a big deal, since I prefer bed 3 anyway. The room was extremely hot, but that isn’t unusual. I cleaned the bed and started tanning.
The entire time, I had a weird feeling. I kept checking the time. Eventually, I noticed the bed had gone past my 7-minute mark. I tried to shut it off but was too anxious to get the button to work properly. I have anxiety and sometimes experience panic in small spaces, so this situation made me very nervous. I quickly got dressed and went to the desk to inform an employee. I was thrilled to see one of the employees I trusted must’ve just clocked in.
Before she could respond, the man who set my bed up said, “Oh, I set it for 10 minutes.”
I was shocked. Absolutely shocked. He had repeated to me multiple times that it would be 7 minutes—so why was it set for 10? Was he not paying attention? Was he annoyed that I was willing to wait? Did he do it intentionally? Regardless of the reason, he knowingly told me it was set for 7, like I had asked, but programmed it for 10.
Of course i asked the other employee what his name was, Sean/Shawn.
This situation may not seem like a big deal to some, but tanning beds obviously come with serious risks. I am aware of them, which is why I follow recommended times. Overexposure increases those risks significantly. He put me in danger and compromised my safety—and that is a huge issue.
What if an elderly person didn’t notice the time? What if someone was on a medication that makes a certain duration of heat exposure dangerous? What if someone received burns or sun poisoning because of a mistake like this? In situations like that, the member would be blamed, not the employee who set the wrong time.
This needs to be addressed immediately. I know I’m not the only member who has had issues with this employee—my friends have also experienced unprofessional interactions with him. He does not demonstrate the “Judgment Free Zone” attitude Planet Fitness is known for, nor does he prioritize customer safety.
I am extremely disappointed, and moving forward, if he is working, he will not be setting up my tanning bed. I will wait as long as necessary for another employee. Members should never feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Employees who put customers at risk put the entire company at risk.
Sean/Shawn, do better, and maybe let go of that big ego, yeah?
