Checking in with reception was the ONLY confident part of this visit. Everything else was a train wreck of ignorance, ineptitude, lack of trust in my own personal knowledge and zero curiosity to find where discrepancies might be. First, here’s background: I’m in menopause and made this appt weeks prior because of unusual spotting plus get a Pap smear. In the time between my scheduling and the actual appt, I met with my menopause specialist for prescription renewals — someone who has my extensive history. Every concern was reviewed, labs ordered and an ultrasound just in case, nothing looked concerning. Two days later was my Planned Parenthood visit. The intake began with the staff member saying — with absolute confidence — that I’m pregnant. I thought surely I misheard her. I asked again. She repeated it. I told her: “I am definitely not pregnant, it’s not remotely possible.” She insisted the test said otherwise, that they ran it “three times.” She would not listen to or hear my thorough explanation why I knew what I was talking about, just her black-and-white diagnosis, no questions of mistakes, human error or further testing for a false positive. I referenced a past pregnancy termination to explain why I know my own body. She didn’t even understand the word “termination.” I had to explain what that meant to someone working in reproductive healthcare. That should tell you everything. I explained that my spotting concerns had been fully addressed with my menopause specialist and that I was now ONLY there for a pap. My firm request was ignored like I never said a single word. I literally had no voice. From there, intake got worse. For the rest of the 35 minutes, she repeatedly questioned whether I was sure, was I “fully” menopausal, how did I know for certain, whether I had an “official diagnosis,” when it started, what happened afterward — on loop, as if she had no ability to retain information or trust that a patient knows their own medical history. Meanwhile, she kept periodically referencing “my pregnancy” and stating it as a fact, no matter how many times I told her it was false. It was like arguing with a brick wall that thought it had superior medical information. I lost count of how many times she left the room to consult with the doctor I still had yet to see. She was simply an intermediary with questions and answers from both sides and not always getting the relays correct. The prescription review stage was just as alarming. When she got to my estradiol, she asked what it was. I reminded her — again — that I am in menopause and it’s half of my regimen to manage symptoms. Her reply? “Oh, I just started that one too. I didn’t know what it was called.” How is someone who doesn’t recognize their own medication responsible for anyone’s record keeping? Then I told her I have Crohn’s. She literally asked: “What’s that from?” I had to explain that Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease. No joke. By then I seriously questioned whether she had any rudimentary medical comprehension and what questionable healthcare scenario I was in. I had already been there about 80 minutes — most of it spent being interrogated by someone who clearly was not qualified for the role — and still had another wait before seeing the doctor. At that point, I no longer trusted the care I was going to receive and left, saying I had to get back to work. I requested a disclosure form to share their results with my specialist and was told that because I hadn’t been seen by a doctor, there was nothing to disclose. Made sense to me. This wasn’t an annoying visit. This was a medically irresponsible reproductive healthcare provider that has no experience with menopause, which in some people can cause false positives. Zero trust for anything I said. Update: I got a notification MyChart had new activity. I discovered that PP uploaded to my medical history, which all but one of my current providers also have access to, that I am pregnant. Going forward I’ll have to repeatedly explain the truth at the intake stage of every single appointment.
