Two stars because the therapist was nice, but otherwise I am concerned about sanitary conditions. I had surgery and needed desensitization around my incision due to high nerve sensitivity. The PT used psyllium husk (which says "sterile" on the label of the container). After rubbing the husks on my incision for several minutes over a bowl... PT went to dump it all back into the container. Dead skin cells and all. I stopped her, questioned her and so she threw it in the garbage. The next thing was rice and then beans. My dead skin cells were exfoliating pretty badly into the container under my wrist. Thankfully she threw those away. I decided it was maybe a brief oversight... but at my next appt she set some hand sanitizer in front of me. When I asked what it was for, she said it was so she didn't have to throw the rice, etc. out this time. I asked if she reused it and she said yes. My insurance money should SURELY go toward Phoenix keeping these items stocked. When I told her it was completely unsanitary, she shifted to another desensitizing method that didn't include those food items. But I just felt really uncomfortable after the experience. I have a healing incision... and I have no idea whose dead skin cells were rubbed on it for my therapy. What if that person had a fungal infection or some other issue that would then be transferred to me? Very unsanitary. PT claimed she had to pay for the rice and beans herself... and if that's the case, shame on Phoenix for not supplying adequate therapy tools. Phoenix gets my money... it should go toward CLEAN products. I get that there are things like equipment that needs wiped down between uses, etc. But I have been to other PT places that give each patient their own containers of putty and put their name on it for future use (I watched a Phoenix patient use the giant lump of putty and then put it back into the container to be reused). Individual, marked containers could easily be done with husks, rice, beans, etc for patients needing to use such things for therapy. Again, therapist and office staff were nice, but after two incidents... I just decided to go elsewhere. Edited to add (after Phoenix's reply on 12/15/25): It is UNBELIEVABLE to me that hand sanitizer being used before using rice, husks, or beans for therapy is considered sanitary by Phoenix!! My dead skin cells from the swelling going down were being exfoliated INTO THE CONTAINER that would then be reused! Every single person I have spoken to, including in the healthcare community, was appalled by my experience. I cannot imagine that would be standard practice. Giving people their OWN containers of product to begin with should be standard protocol for sanitary purposes. Patients should not have to ask! What a cop-out reply, Phoenix!
