We were in the area for a wedding and brought my daughter for an ear infection.
We were frustrated to see that the PA up-coded our daughter's simple sick visit to a "moderate complexity" visit which resulted in an extra ~100$ being billed to insurance and falling onto our family. PA spent less than 5 minutes with us as this was a routine medical concern that we normally would have brought her to her pediatrician for.
I appealed the coding but was declined by Albany Med without explanation. Disappointed that this Urgent Care would support overcharging patients in this way.

Update: This clinic lied on their billing codes, claiming that they spent 45 min of face to face time with me for a moderate concern issue which requires an actual 45 minutes of face to face time including face time with a Supervising MD. I was seen by a certified PA for maximum of 5 min and absolutely at no time did a qualified supervising MD come into the room. That means I was charged $500 for what should legally have been billed as a $60-100 intake.
I sent a basic email requesting an official response on:
Each procedure code (CPT/HCPCS)
Date of service
Provider name
Charges and adjustments
Insurance payments and patient responsibility
To the billing contacts listed on their website. It’s been several weeks reaching out to official contacts with each saying “I’m not the right person, call this number!” However insurance disputes require official written correspondence.
This means that I now have to pay to send certified mail to just to get the documents I need to challenge an absolute lie.
My experience was similar to what others have described; the practice notes they are equipped to offer urgent care and/or a referral to another specialist within the AlbanyMed system….they are not. They essentially processed my insurance and co-pay then sent me to the “ER”. They didn’t offer a referral to their own ER hospital - they kept it very ambiguous, and sent me out the door without the support and escalation privileges they are funded to provide. It begs a lot of questions; the first being if the purpose of urgent care is to relieve non emergency cases in crowded ERs, but the urgent care facility is not equipped correctly….why wouldn’t they alert their own root health network of that?
I came in for severe allergies that were not managed by OTC meds and a specialist appointment not for another two months.
We adopted a rescue pup and while I didn’t anticipate her impact on my indoor allergy - I can’t give her away, she’s my family now. I needed a solution.
There are prescription corticosteroids, stronger antihistamines, broncodialatlors etc that I could only access through a doc until I could get in for immunotherapy…..but they refused. The gave me a diagnostic sheet that said I could have a litany of far fetched issues like “Atelectasis” that I COULD POSSIBLY have (absolutely extremely unlikely given that I haven’t had surgery or been on bedrest for months??)…most of which are managed with the SAME tools mentioned above, because they don’t have an X-ray, they couldn’t treat. They OVERCHARGED my insurance for a manageable issue, handed me a medical malpractice CYA, and hoped I would go away.
I called over to the Catskill WellNow, described my issue and they gave me a solution for short term management.
I wanted to support this local practice, but taking my family to Catskill from now on. I work in this industry from the legal/pharma/health HN side and have personal experience. This is a classic case of medical mal and fraud that I have personally worked decades to correct with Gov stakeholders. That this practice is actively dodging any accountability is a bad sign that they plan to continue taking advantage of those who don’t know any better.
The doctor I was seeing must have seen my reaction to being scooted out of the door after billing me and became frustrated. She asked if I thought the ER would help me and I told her truthfully I didn’t think so - I was not at that moment experiencing a medical emergency, I was there to get basic prescription symptom management to avoid one. Ethically, to burdening an ER serving a vulnerable population with my allergies- I would have appreciated at minimum a referral to a better equipped clinic within the AlbanyMed system- which the website for this place states is an alternative outcome.
If this clinic is only interested in treating a specific list of low stakes primary care issues outside of usual operating hours - then say that on the site and/or redirect patients at intake before processing insurance payments.

No one wants to be at urgent care on the Fourth of July, however, Dalia went above and beyond too assist an elderly patient To expedite being seen and Nicole had already been contacted by the time we arrived. If I could give more than five stars, I would thank you for your compassion. It seems to be sadly lacking in the healthcare world, but it was at the Coxsackie location of urgent care today.
