Dr. Jay Fleischman began his career as a systems analyst and programmer at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York while earning his degrees in applied mathematics, computer engineering, and medicine from Columbia University. He completed his ophthalmology training at the Wilmer Institute at Johns Hopkins and specialized in retina at the Medical College of Wisconsin. In 1980, Dr. Fleischman became the Director of Retina at the Bethesda Eye Institute at St. Louis University. He later took on the role of Director at Montefiore Hospital, affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in 1988. In 2000, he transitioned to private practice while continuing to serve as a Clinical Associate Professor.Since 1984, Dr. Fleischman has lectured and taught surgical techniques worldwide through Project ORBIS, the Flying Eye Hospital. He has authored numerous papers and holds several patents, including a device designed to restore vision for patients with macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss after age 55. Among his many inventions, the laser endophotocoagulator has become an essential tool and a global standard of care for advanced surgical retina cases.As an expert in diabetes treatment and its complications, particularly diabetic retinopathy, Dr. Fleischman participated as an investigator in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), a pivotal study by the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. He has consulted for various companies, including HGM, Alcon, and Mentor, and has served as an advisor for Dauphin Capital Management, NGN Capital Management, and Pfizer.
