I had a scheduled appointment at 1:20 PM at Cone Health in downtown Graham. Due to an unexpected delay with a client, I anticipated being late and called the clinic at 1:25 PM to notify them. I spoke with a representative immediately, confirmed my appointment time, and informed them I was approximately five minutes away. I was placed on hold for about two minutes. During that time, I was told the doctor had been consulted and that I could still come in. I was also advised not to rush or drive unsafely.
I arrived at 1:36 PM—just one minute past Cone Health’s official 15-minute grace period for late arrivals. However, the front desk staff incorrectly stated that the grace period was only 10 minutes. I explained that I had called ahead and received verbal confirmation to proceed, but they still refused to check me in. I emphasized that my appointment was scheduled for 45 minutes and that I only needed 10 minutes to clarify medication and address basic health concerns. The staff said they had checked with the doctor, who declined to see me.
This decision was deeply disappointing, especially given the compassionate nature of the physician I’ve seen previously. It’s hard to believe that the refusal came directly from the doctor, considering their past attentiveness and care. I lost a full day of work and was unable to resolve pressing questions about four medications. Now I’m sitting at the pharmacy, where they can only send another request to the clinic—just like last time, when no response came for over a month.
The issue here is not with the medical provider, but with the administrative gatekeeping at the front desk. I was only one minute past the official grace period and had made every effort to communicate responsibly. Still, I was denied care. This rigid enforcement of policy failed to account for real-life circumstances and the effort I made to follow protocol.
Many of us who rely on this clinic are working-class individuals who must take time off work to attend appointments. Some are underinsured or rely on state coverage. Denying care under these conditions—especially when a patient calls ahead and is told to come in—is not just inconvenient, it’s dehumanizing.
If the call service represents the clinic, then the guidance they provide should be honored. I followed their instructions and was still turned away. This experience reflects a breakdown in communication and a lack of flexibility that undermines patient trust. I’m not asking for special treatment—just basic dignity and understanding.
This feedback is not meant to disparage the medical professionals, who have consistently shown care and compassion. It’s a call for improved coordination and respect at the front desk, so patients aren’t penalized for circumstances beyond their control.
Update: went back to the same gatekeeper showed her this, and they said that no, that doesn't apply to them. But it's on the website.
So then she said she was looking at the website, and it says, 10 minutes. Still, we're getting hung up on the fact that I was a few minutes late. I did the due diligence. I called and the doctor didn't have another appointment for 45 minutes. Even though I ate up 15 minutes, there was still a 1 an hour before anyone else was coming in. There was nobody waiting room.

This ‘doctors office’ has to be one of the most poorly run doctors offices i’ve been too. In the past year I have had more bad experiences than i have had good ones. First off, I was told incorrect negative test results by one of the nurses only to find out THREE DAYS LATER that in reality I was positive. Once I was treated, they told me 7 days and I would be good. I go for a follow up test a month later, mind you I scheduled this last week and they confirmed it with me, I end up taking the afternoon off to drive to them, only to be told they couldn’t see me today and to come back in 2 MONTHS. When I stated that they wrongly informed me and could have told me this before hand, the responded to me with “well, I’m telling you now” in a very rude and snarky tone. Safe to say I will not be going back to this place! Would give 0 stars if i could.
