My parents were patients of Dr. Helmly for 20+ years until she retired about a year ago. I've attended all their appointments for several years now so have seen for myself the degradation of every aspect of this practice since. Their appointments have been moved back repeatedly by staff who insist on calling them "new" patients every time a doctor leaves the practice. Most recently they were told the only remaining doctor is no longer taking "new patients" which includes my parents. The only thing new about any of this is the staff. They had an outstanding doctor on contract for six months but did not renew his contract in June because "they don't want doctors" . All of this is a result of the leadership at UM Shore Regional Health reducing the cost, quality, and availability of patient care. Steer clear.

Stay away from this practice at all costs! My dog is treated with more compassion and dignity at his vet than my 80 year old mother received at this so called practice. I am in town helping my incredible mother with some health issues. She had been seeing a doctor in this practice who she just loved, and that woman retired. My mother was under the impression that she didn’t have a new doctor yet and thought her new doctor wasn’t arriving until February of next year, so she went to a nurse practitioner outside of this practice to get help with some pain issues. That nurse practitioner helped her get some x-rays and make some appointments. When I came into town I encouraged her to call her primary care practice, and ask why she didn’t have a doctor. She was told she did have a doctor (news to her) and made an appointment to get help with severe leg pain. I went with her to her appointment at UM Shore Primary Care today. The nurse checking her in was not very patient with her as she was trying to answer the questions she was being asked. After the nurse left the office another woman came in and told my mom that they were dropping her from the practice because she had gone to see another doctor and that they would not be seeing her today and that she would be charged for the visit. If I had not been there, I would not have believed it. It felt like elder abuse the way they treated my mom with such disrespect and lack of empathy. I am so grateful that I was with her when she experienced this complete lack of care. I want to make sure that no one else has to be treated this way in this practice starting by posting this review and letting everybody in my parents community know to stay away!

This is NOT a trustworthy office and their inability to conduct themselves in a professional manner is detrimental to their patients. I apologize in advance because this will be a little lengthy. I was extremely happy when I first started going to this office, Dr Chapman was the best doctor I ever had. I was aware that she would be out of maternity leave for a spell shortly after starting with her, confident if there was any issues the office could handle it. I was wrong in that assumption because out of the blue Dr Chapman supposedly quit, I was surprised however I was assured that the doctor place with whose name I was only given as Melissa, no last name, could do the job. I was made to wait 6 weeks to get an appointment, the closest they had, then 90 minutes before my appointment I received a call from the office informing me Melissa had to leave on a family emergency. I asked if I could reschedule the appointment but was told no. I asked if the doctor was only going to be out on a family emergency for the day why they were not able to reschedule and I was informed that they weren't sure she was coming back ever. I asked if she was out on a family emergency or if she had quit and they said they weren't sure but she told me to go ahead and call the next morning first thing when they opened to try to get another appointment. The office assistant said that they couldn't guarantee that they would be able to schedule me for any appointments but that if I was the first to call I might get lucky. The fact that she represents a medical office and they're telling me I have to try to win the lottery to get an appointment is disgusting. I decided that at this point if they could not do what was necessary to see and care for their patients in a better manner than they were not the office for me. About 2 weeks later they called and attempted to gloss over my request to have my records sent to the new office I chose and tried scheduling another appointment with some unknown doctor in their office and I told them exactly where I stood and I figured that that would be the end of it. However instead yesterday I received a letter informing me that because our relationship and I'm paraphrasing has soured that they would no longer be able to see me as if somehow they were letting me go as a patient instead of already being informed that I was firing them. I don't know who oversees this office and I don't know what kind of people actually run it because it doesn't seem like they're very competent. I do know that in the end the people that suffered the most were the patients. This isn’t just lack of adequate office personnel it’s a dangerous mix of underqualified management, doctors and a poor practice. Go anywhere else for your own safety!
