My parents were patients of Dr. Helmly for 20+ years until she retired about a year ago. I've attended all their appointments for several years now so have seen for myself the degradation of every aspect of this practice since. Their appointments have been moved back repeatedly by staff who insist on calling them "new" patients every time a doctor leaves the practice. Most recently they were told the only remaining doctor is no longer taking "new patients" which includes my parents. The only thing new about any of this is the staff.
They had an outstanding doctor on contract for six months but did not renew his contract in June because "they don't want doctors" . All of this is a result of the leadership at UM Shore Regional Health reducing the cost, quality, and availability of patient care. Steer clear.

Stay away from this practice at all costs! My dog is treated with more compassion and dignity at his vet than my 80 year old mother received at this so called practice. I am in town helping my incredible mother with some health issues. She had been seeing a doctor in this practice who she just loved, and that woman retired. My mother was under the impression that she didn’t have a new doctor yet and thought her new doctor wasn’t arriving until February of next year, so she went to a nurse practitioner outside of this practice to get help with some pain issues. That nurse practitioner helped her get some x-rays and make some appointments. When I came into town I encouraged her to call her primary care practice, and ask why she didn’t have a doctor. She was told she did have a doctor (news to her) and made an appointment to get help with severe leg pain. I went with her to her appointment at UM Shore Primary Care today. The nurse checking her in was not very patient with her as she was trying to answer the questions she was being asked. After the nurse left the office another woman came in and told my mom that they were dropping her from the practice because she had gone to see another doctor and that they would not be seeing her today and that she would be charged for the visit. If I had not been there, I would not have believed it. It felt like elder abuse the way they treated my mom with such disrespect and lack of empathy. I am so grateful that I was with her when she experienced this complete lack of care. I want to make sure that no one else has to be treated this way in this practice starting by posting this review and letting everybody in my parents community know to stay away!

I wasn’t going to say anything regarding my horrible experience with this practice, but, after having read that others have had similar experiences, not only with this office, but more importantly, with the same “NP”.
Never have I had a more frustrating, belittling, and unprofessional experience, in any area of my life, much less with a “caregiver.” Not only was I unable to get my medications refilled, I was made to feel as though this was due to my own inadequacy. I was told by Melissa that she had never had a patient who wasn’t able to get their refills through either My Portfolio, or by calling in. My pharmacy was not able to get through to her either. And, she denies receiving and notification s from them. They have saved copies of their faxes…
After reading that so many others have had such difficulties with this person, I am somewhat comforted, and feel it important to speak up.
I have a myriad of serious health issues and did not appreciate being treated so poorly.
She has told me that her supervisors have backed her actions.
I realize that we are all different and have different needs. I’m no spring chicken and have lived through a lot of in my life.
I consider this experience reprehensible, particularly because I have been left “high and dry.” Fortunately, I am blessed with amazing specialists who will carry me until I start with my new GP at the end of this month.
Please be aware.
