Just wanted to share my mom’s recent experience at Miracle-Ear in Taunton, MA.
While the staff were friendly during our first appointment, the overall experience left us uneasy, especially considering the cost and the pressure involved.
My mom, dad, and sister went in during a special promotion. The team was very persuasive, explaining the risks of hearing loss and its connection to conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s- which I agree with. They presented them with tiered packages, the top one being $11,000, with a “limited-time” $2,000 discount. The idea was that these would be custom hearing aids, priced around $9,000 after the discount With a big purchase like this, they need to be mindful that people need time to make a decision. They all felt uneasy after leaving. Granted, my mom was not forced to put down a deposit, but still.
Also they said they would be custom to his ears- no custom impressions were made. They didn’t do the standard molds typically used to shape hearing aids to someone’s ears, which immediately raised red flags to me.
Still, my mom was caught in the moment, felt pressured, and put down a $1,000 deposit using her own credit card. She signed paperwork on the spot. The next morning, she had buyer’s remorse and decided to explore other options before committing to such a major purchase, which seemed totally reasonable.
When she called to cancel the next morning (she left there at 6PM the night prior), they said she’d have to come in person with my father to reverse the order and and that his hearing aids were already delivered! They said my dad had to come in to get the refund as he signed the paperwork and made the deposit. And this is when I realized my mom was the one who signed and paid, so there was no reason she couldn’t handle the cancellation on her own. What surprised me even more is that the employees thought my dad had signed the paperwork. It’s confusing to me that they let my mom sign everything, considering she wasn’t the one getting the hearing aids.
We showed up for the cancellation appointment today, and the tone felt so awful. I came along for support, but from the start, it felt defensive and passive-aggressive. I simply asked if they knew she had an appt, since I wasn’t at the first visit, and I was met with coldness, like we were causing a problem.
What concerns me most is how elderly customers might be pressured into spending thousands without fully understanding all their options.
Also, no one checked their insurance. There was no mention of it, nothing. And again, no ear molds were done, yet they were selling “custom” hearing aids at a top-tier price of 9,000 with an interest rate around 10% if you were to make monthly payments. So sad for the elderly.
I understand sales are part of business. But this felt like unnecessary pressure, and when we changed our mind, we didn’t feel respected. People can and do change their minds, and they deserve to be treated with care.
Normally, I wouldn’t bother writing a review. But the way we were treated over the phone and in person made me feel like I had to say something. I felt brushed off and dismissed, and my mom didn't feel supported either. We were always kind.
If you're looking into hearing aids, please get a second opinion. There are other providers in the area and for less money- the rate miracle ear is going - f rating in the BBB, I think they need to rethink some things. P.s we did get our deposit thankfully.
