After more than 11 years at the same pain clinic — years of procedures, injections, ablations, and routine drug tests I never once failed — I was suddenly told at an appointment that if I couldn’t provide a urine sample immediately, they would “take my blood then.” I explained that I had just used the restroom ten minutes earlier, but instead of compassion, I was told this was to “make it easier for me” so I wouldn’t have to sit in the bathroom all day. There was no eye contact, no explanation, no respect — just an ultimatum. When I refused to be treated like a suspect after over a decade of proven compliance, I was denied my medication. The result was withdrawal as punishment — not for any failed test or misconduct, but for asserting my dignity. I live with ankylosing spondylitis, sacroiliitis, and I have thyroid cancer and survived an 11 hour major spine surgery. My diagnoses are well-documented, progressive, and real. Yet I was treated with suspicion, hostility, and fear — because my pain required medication in a climate where clinics are “being watched” and patients are made to pay the price. What I experienced that day was not medicine. It was stigma and humiliation. And I will not accept stigma as the cost of pain care. If this can happen to me after 11 years of compliance, it can happen to anyone living with chronic pain. Patients deserve compassion, partnership, and dignity — not suspicion and punishment.
