This place was very ridiculous in many aspects. While already being exhausted and in distress, prepare to have just as many issues with insurance as you do your child. The therapists are extremely limited and highly biased. The recovery coaches are unknowledgeable. Clementines main goal is to have one eat as much as possible before insurance cuts out. But any child or parent reading this, please do not be fearful to go because you will still get many positive things out of it.
[For more info, find Jordan Brown’s review. They cover a good portion of what I lacked to discuss and have a very solid review IMO.]
(DISCLAIMER: Majority of the nurses were absolute angels.)
Many of the recovery coaches appeared to lack proper experience, qualifications, and understanding of how to effectively support individuals in a recovery setting. At times, their behavior came across as judgmental and dismissive. For instance, the bathrooms were locked constantly, and when I needed to use one at night, I found both the recovery coach and nurse asleep with headphones in. Despite multiple attempts to wake them, they remained unresponsive. When I brought this up later, they denied it ever happened and suggested I should have knocked on the wall next time if they were “truly” sleeping.
There were also instances of unprofessional conduct that made the environment more stressful. Recovery coaches sometimes delayed meals because they wanted their food heated first, prioritizing themselves over others. On other occasions, coaches and nurses played games like “Just Dance” late into the night, causing noise and keeping the lights on, which disrupted sleep for everyone trying to sleep. Given how emotionally challenging the environment already was, the lack of peace and consistent rest added unnecessary strain for everyone involved.
Additionally, I had a troubling experience with my dietitian. Despite having previously been overweight and then becoming slightly underweight, my new target weight was set to a point that would categorize me as overweight again. This decision deeply upset my parents, especially considering the physical and emotional challenges I had already faced related to portion control and the health effects of being overweight. The approach of simply “listening to your body” didn’t feel balanced—it seemed as though they pushed extremes rather than helping me find a healthy, sustainable middle ground. Also, you will be chronically constipated !
As for the therapy offered at Clementine, I found it lacking in meaningful support. The therapists seemed more focused on pushing a specific mindset rather than truly helping individuals work through their unique struggles. This wasn’t about politics—it was about random conspiracies that the therapist had relating to eating disorders. My therapist also believed she was a god, reading the minds of individuals and had the ability to know it all. The therapeutic support often felt superficial and unhelpful, which was disappointing for a place meant to help people heal.
On the billing side, my parents wanted to admit themselves to behavioral places to help cope with the stress it caused. To any parent, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!!! The individual with Monte Nido screwed up numerous times and racked up a bill for my parents to pay for over $100,000 which was originally promised to be “covered”. Fortunately, my parents are very intelligent and kept a record of everything. This still didn’t prevent the long countless hours they felt lost, frustrated, and angry. No one was helpful and no one followed through with promises.
If you’re deep into an eating disorder, this place is your best bet. Do not let this review spook you. It is more to inform you that as a client, you have rights and they will pull a lot of BS on you.
I attended Clementine, an eating disorder treatment center located in Palmetto Bay, in October of 2023-January 2024, and I am profoundly grateful for the support and guidance I received from both the staff and my fellow residents. Prior to my admission, I was struggling with severe anorexia; my doctor described my condition as critical based on my bloodwork and overall health.
During my time at Clementine, I formed strong, meaningful connections with the staff, who consistently encouraged my progress and reinforced my commitment to recovery. Although there were occasional challenges, particularly with two younger residents whose negative behaviors were not always effectively addressed. But, the majority of the individuals I met were respectful, compassionate, and supportive, which made the healing environment far more welcoming.
Clementine’s primary focus was on achieving weight restoration, which sometimes meant that emotional and psychological recovery received less emphasis. Nonetheless, I found comfort and joy in the small things, including the scrumptious meals prepared by Fernando, whose cooking made a genuine difference in my experience.
With the dedicated help of Agnes, Dayami, Zoe, Fernando, Jessi, Kim, Gaby, and many others, I was able to reclaim control over my life and continue forward in my recovery. Today, I consider myself fully recovered and am proud to say that I have a healthier, more positive relationship with my body than ever before.
