Painful Donation Experience / May 2025: donation at a Big Red Bus adjacent the Manatee County Administration building at 1112 was stopped after the needle insertion was ineffective (minimal-to-no blood flowing), and very, very painful while needle was in place. After waiting for 3-4 minutes for the pain to subside (it never did), I requested the needle be removed so I could be on my way. Come to find out, the phlebotemist had been "on the job" a single-digit number of months -- no name here, but remediation (on an orange, or rubber tubing, but not a human!) is recommended and urged. And NO, my A- blood will not be donated in a Big Red Bus ever again.

I really wanted this place to be easy and efficient, but my visit was anything but. The receptionist seemed totally unsure of what was going on, which didn’t inspire much confidence.
On top of that, they wouldn’t let me email my prescription for a simple blood draw. Instead, they made me call my doctor and have it faxed—in 2025. There’s no reason they can’t have a basic “info@…” email address for situations like this. It felt outdated and unnecessarily difficult.
Overall, they came across as unprepared and unprofessional. I won’t be rushing back.

Since 2019, I’ve been donating whole blood at OneBlood Manatee, and in that time I’ve noticed the tremendous role Mark plays. He truly holds the entire operation together. There is a sense of comfort and confidence knowing he is in the building or has any input in the daily operations.
I sincerely hope this fine young gentleman is recognized for the outstanding leadership and stability he brings to OneBlood.
He has a gift at mentoring the younger or new hires. He has a calm and relaxing approach. I don't share how very anxious I am every needle stick. Mark has a calming sense over his patients.

The lady totally botched my first Platelet experience. She failed to insert the needle deep enough to enter the vein, and immediately stopped drawing blood and made no effort to reinsert or correct her mistake (she actually made an attempt at blaming me for her mistake. very unprofessional)
She knew it was her fault, too. She became very quiet and would mutter and I had to ask her to repeat herself. I was very confused because this was the first time donating Platelets, so I didn't know if I could try again in the next week or not. She failed to communicate any of what inconveniences her mistake caused to my efforts to make a difference with my donations.
After awkwardly leaving thinking "I'll try again in a couple weeks" because that's how frequent one can give Platelets. Nope. She decided to put down that she drew enough blood to make it a blood donation session, so I can't donate for four months.
Very strange and and horrible first experience. I've donated blood here before, and the staff can be absolutely lovely. The lady that day was just awkward and unprofessional as soon as she made her mistake. She seemed old enough to be able to know how to properly do her job and AT LEAST let me know what went wrong.
I wont let this experience stop me from giving Platelets. I'll just be going to the establishment slightly further away. I don't want to be in her care ever again.

I donated blood for the very first time today over at Bealls corporate center today through the Big Red Bus. My phlebotomy was performed by Thomas. I was told that I was a good candidate to do a double red cell donation. Thomas explained everything to me in detail and made me feel very at ease. I did do a double red cell donation and felt so good about doing it. It did not hurt. Thomas is very good at what he does and I will certainly be donating again. The whole team was very professional and made you feel safe and secure. Thank you!
