I've been around many Muay Thai and boxing gyms in the Bay Area and if you're into getting individual attention and a tightly nit culture full of kind, intelligent, creative types then CMT is the gym for you! There are beginner friendly classes as well as competitive classes so this is a good gym for all levels. Coach Ra is a very experienced and seasoned ex-professional fighter who cares very deeply about his students. He has been training or coaching Muay Thai in the Bay Area for decades and trained under legendary Thai fighters(i.e. Jongsanan, Bunkerd) so his knowledge is authentic and steeped in experience. That being said he will be a drill sergeant and push you to your limits! But never in a mean-spirited or disrespectful way. For the competitive classes he will actually get in and spar with you and give everyone individual attention which I think is very rare and a sign of a great and passionate trainer. If you're new he will take time to talk to you and get to know you and what you're looking to get out of training. The students are diverse and welcoming so it's not a gym that feels like a boy's club or is full of egotistical 'tough guy' types. I honestly feel like this gym doesn't get the credit/attention it deserves and is an absolute underground Oakland gem.

The classes are good and the coach (who is also the owner) is great at teaching Muay Thai. But I must warn you - if you’re a young woman, stay away. The coach made extremely inappropriate comments and downright creepy comments towards me and my body in the past multiple times and as a result I no longer felt comfortable learning here and I will not be back.
