The food was amazingly seasoned and cooked fresh, both things that ate usually lacking in soul food establishments. Also the service was excellent and the staff were warm and welcoming. I will definitely be going back often.

1st time here on NYE, so I will have to try again when it isn't a holiday. The service was good, very friendly wait staff. The drinks are rather small, but have free refills. The wait for the food was a bit long and the dishes came out 1 at a time with maybe 5 to 7 mins before the next plate came out. Definitely be prepared to wait here, don't come if you're on a timed lunch break. The food was very good, especially the mac and cheese 😋. The smothered chicken was tender and flavorful. The meatloaf was juicy. Catfish and shrimp were fried nicely, not too crunchy. Will definitely have to go back and try the oxtails which are only available Fri - Sun.

Food was ok.. both of us said we should have went to Mrs Kitchen. Waitress was nice. Food was crisp, my friend had to use his cameras flashlight to see the menu. There was nothing that I had to have again... wait! The cornbread, was great! It was a good experience to say we tried it.

Went here hoping for some tasty soul food and had a horrible experience. Atmosphere when we walked in was not bad ... clean and comfortable but extremely dark ... almost too dark to see ... but pleasant nonetheless ... we were excited to see a large selection of items and intended to try a number of different things but apparently the waitress / manager had other plans for us ... she came over to take our drink order and my wife and I both ordered waters ... we also asked for some buffalo wings as an appetizer ... she came back with two tiny glasses of water and we told her we needed just a minute to decide what options we wanted for our main course ... somehow at this point I can only assume she was upset about something because she completely ignored us the rest of the time ... after about fifteen mintues of sitting there with empty glasses and her walking by us several times to attend to other patrons but completely ignoring us I finally went up to the front to let her know we were ready to order ... she said ok but then continued to walk back and forth right in front of us ignoring us ... finally about ten minutes later she brought us our wings ... at this point we asked for some blue cheese dressing to which she rolled her eyes and said "sure" ... she disappeared to the back and you guessed it ... ten more minutes before my wife had to go up and remind her about the blue cheese and another lady ended up finally bringing that out but our waters remained empty and neither waitress even attempted to refill them ... at this point we were done ... we were not about to place an order for entrees after the horrible treatment we had already been subject to ... so we finished the wings (which were pretty good in spite of everything) and went up to the front to pay ... there was one couple ahead of us and after they paid the waitress / manager helped two other people who were just sitting in there waiting for to go orders and totally ignored me standing right in front of the register ... I continued to wait patiently and finally when it was my turn to pay she rang me up for the wings and two waters at $2.50 each!!! No BS ... this actually happened ... they served us two tiny waters, never refilled them even once, and then had the nerve to charge us $2.50 each glass ... what in the actual ???? Needless to say this place has no business opening their doors to the public if they are going to treat customers in this manner ... through it all my wife and I smiled politely and spoke with patience and kindness ... but one thing is for sure we will NEVER go back and I caution anyone to be aware that the employees at this place are capable of being this rude and inhospitable ... On a side note ... we went down the road about three blocks to one of our old reliable soul food spots that's been a San Antonio staple for many years and we got good food, and fast friendly service with a smile ... and guess what the water was free!!! Just goes to show that sometimes trying new things can backfire ... Again let me be clear ... the wings we had were solid but we were unable to try anything else because the service was so incredibly horrible ...

J’s Eatery delivered one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. The smothered pork chops were fall‑apart tender, covered in rich, savory gravy that tasted like it came straight from my grandma’s kitchen. The red beans and rice were perfectly seasoned—comforting, hearty, and cooked with real care. The fried okra had that ideal crunch on the outside with a soft, flavorful bite inside, no grease, no shortcuts. And let me talk about that cherry pineapple Kool‑Aid. Absolute perfection. Sweet, refreshing, and the kind of drink that makes you smile before you even put the cup down. On top of all that, the customer service was just as impressive as the food. Warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from start to finish. You can feel the pride in every bite and every interaction. Js Eatery is an easy five stars. If you want real home cooking with amazing flavor, and great hospitality, this is the spot.
