My advice based on my visit is: don't go in the last hour before they close, if you want to eat dinner.
We had a 9:00 pm reservation on a Sat. night, and they immediately seated us in the bar. In retrospect, I would have insisted on the dining room upstairs (Dos Caminos' are known for their sophisticated decor), but I thought maybe it was closed. (This location is in a business district, near Grand Central, so I assumed maybe they only kept the bar open at night. I also didn't want to be a pain to the restaurant staff, since I know it's a tough job. But as we were eating, I saw people leaving from upstairs, so it actually must have been open.)
That could have been forgiven, except once we were seated, the lapses and carelessness in service began. We ordered an appetizer, plus an entree each. The food came promptly, nice and hot, which I appreciate -- but all at once, instead of the order having been put in, promptly timed, so we could have our appetizer first, finish it, and then have our entrees nice and hot.
I pointed out to our server, who plunked our main dishes on the table first," "hey, we ordered an appetizer." He got a little defensive and protested, "hey, the order came all on one ticket!" So, when I saw the waiter, I complained, "hey, we asked for our appetizer, and when I ordered it, I clearly said, "we'll have this such-and-such 'as an appetizer'."
So, the waiter seemed pretty unconcerned, asking me if he wanted us to take it away and put it under a heat lamp. That seemed kind of dumb, so we just rolled with it.
I would have overlooked this -- I mean, stuff happens, sometimes -- but then it turned out a couple of items were missing (a side dish, the chips for our queso dip), so the waiter had to veer off and find those. Then, I later had to flag him down again, which took a while (bartender and hostess were not far from us, but I couldn't catch either's eye), to ask for a drink refill, and then, again, had to look for him for too long, when we were done, to get the check.
So, getting the sequence of dishes wrong, plus not being able to find him as the meal progressed was a letdown.
I have every sympathy with the staff having had a long day, or maybe they were understaffed (I have no idea what was going on upstairs, as I said), or maybe they were just in a hurry to get out of there and begin their Saturday night.
As I'm sure you get by now, it was just that having them drop the ball, and drop the ball, and drop the ball, at what is usually a high-end resraurant group with solid service, was an unwelcome surprise. I also lay some blame on the server, bartender and hostess for not covering for the waiter and keeping an eye out on the (relatively few) customers who were there by that time. Neither staff member appeared super busy while we were there. They just didn't act like a team in keeping a pulse on the customers, which is what you want to see as a sign of a well-managed staff.
So, that's why I'd recommend choosing someplace else unless you're going to hit this Dos Caminos at a peak hour. We probably won't be back for a long time -- we like the food, but we have too many great options in our neighborhood, or will probably hit the Park Avenue South location (near Flatiron) instead.
The location of this Dos Caminos is in the ground level of a Lexington Ave. office building in a space that, back in the day, had a legendary longtime fine dining place, Vermilion, but had been vacant for many years (maybe 8 to 10?), since well before the pandemic, so I was excited when I saw Dos Caminos open up in there, and I definitely was rooting for it to be a success. But I fear they're going to blow it in this location if they don't up their game on the service.
