Not the kind of restaurant I usually go to, but overall it was a very nice experience.
Food was delicious (specially the wagyu beef and the black cod), drinks were properly fixed, and the staff was very attentive. Shoutout to Bruno, our server last night!

We visited last night with a party of 10 to celebrate a birthday and spent well over $1,000, yet the service completely ruined what should have been a fun evening.
From the start, the staff was rude and unprofessional. One server mocked a guest for ordering a Diet Coke instead of alcohol, even after she explained she had to be at the hospital at 6 a.m. for work—completely unnecessary and uncomfortable.
While some dishes were shared, many guests ordered individual meals. We were then told they “don’t do individual orders” and everything had to be family-style, which was never communicated beforehand. Food, including sushi, was repeatedly dropped at the opposite end of the table with no effort to give it to the person who ordered it.
The biggest issue came at the end. We brought a small $13 birthday cake just for a quick photo and a single bite for the birthday girl. We were told there was a $90 cake-cutting fee. When we asked them not to cut it and simply provide a fork, they refused—no fork, plate, napkin, or knife—and even cleared the table, stating it was “$90 or nothing.”
This felt incredibly petty and money-driven given how much we had already spent. We ultimately had to box the cake up and throw it out outside the restaurant.
The restaurant has a great vibe, which makes this even more disappointing. Unfortunately, the service was rude and uncomfortable, and our group will not be returning or recommending this place to others.

We left Zuma New York feeling genuinely disappointed.
When we made the reservation, no one told us we would be seated at the bar. When we arrived, three of us were placed there, which made the entire experience uncomfortable and awkward, especially when trying to share food. We asked if it was possible to move to a regular table, but the staff made very little effort to help, which immediately set the tone for the night.
From where we were sitting, we could see visible dirt and poor hygiene coming from the kitchen during food preparation. That alone was unsettling. On top of that, the sushi simply did not taste fresh, which was extremely disappointing given the reputation and pricing of the restaurant.
What upset us the most, however, was how my child was treated. While she was eating with chopsticks, some of the waiters were laughing at her. Seeing your child being mocked in what is supposed to be a welcoming environment is upsetting and completely unnecessary.
This experience wasn’t about small mistakes it was about feeling uncomfortable, ignored, and disrespected. A restaurant like this should understand that good service is not just about the food, but about how guests are treated.
We expected much more, and unfortunately, this visit fell far below that expectation.

We’ve been coming to Zuma for years and have always enjoyed it, which made tonight especially disappointing. Several food and drink items arrived incomplete (a lychee martini without lychee, a salad missing its garnishes), and the quality of the fish was noticeably below what we’ve come to expect based on past visits. Unfortunately, this experience has made us reconsider returning.

We’ve been coming to Zuma for years, and it’s one of the very few NYC restaurants where the quality never loses its edge.
The cocktails set the mood immediately — the passion fruit and raspberry martini is perfection, with the lychee martini with rose petals a close rival in mixology decadence. The seasonal omakase is a nonstop parade of hits: grilled calamari, broccoli and avocado salad, mouthwatering glazed black cod, and wagyu beef that quite literally melts in your mouth.
We fully planned to pass on dessert — until a centerpiece-worthy plate was set in front of us. Fresh fruit, passion fruit sorbet, lava cake, and a few creamy, passion-fruit creations that were impossible to identify but impossible to forget quickly made it clear that “just one bite” was utterly unrealistic.
With beautiful decor, great music, beautiful presentation and impeccably attentive service, Zuma delivers on every level. Year after year, it remains the gift that keeps on giving.
