As a 15+ year resident of Bowie, I am not so certain what happened to our beloved Safeway on Northview Drive. Checkout is always congested from self-scan to cash registers (with 1-2 belted lines being open at a time). Store is often organized in a way where displays interrupt cart traffic. Items are consistently sold out (such as store-brand bread), or items are so high up on the shelves which makes it impossible for those in our community with disabilities. Store upkeep can improve: thick, smoky smell upon entry, disheveled carts, consistently empty sanitizing wipes- not good especially now in the midst of flu season, etc. As for staff shortages, I'm not sure where the breakdown is. Despite this, I certainly appreciate the representation of our community elders being able to work and interact with others. I think that is all for now. Looking forward to gradual improvements!

There’s a young lady at this store with dreadlocks that’s always angry every single time I come in. A couple of weeks ago I came in, and I noticed she was raising her voice and going back and-forth about the price of an item with an elderly man. This elderly man was talking to her calmly, but she seemed quite agitated and was noticeably angry. I visited the store recently and when it came time for me to check out my items, I noticed she wasn’t wearing a name tag or anything to let me know that she worked for Safeway. She was standing at the front of self check out with a plain black shirt on and blue jeans ON HER CELL PHONE. I politely asked her If she worked for the store and received no response ( I genuinely did not know If this was a customer or an employee). My Self check out machine was going off because I wanted an item removed which is the only reason I asked her if she worked at the store. She proceeded not to answer me, but walked towards me and asked me a question I did not quite hear. Because I noticed there was tension, I quickly let her know I did not want the item I selected, and she AGGRESSIVELY asked me “weather or not I wanted her to take off the item”. ( I would suspect this would be pretty obvious, especially since that’s what I just told her)… To the young lady: If you don’t like working with people and you choose to be angry and use you phone at work, then maybe a customer service career is not for you; especially if you’re going to work around elderly customers. Bowie is full of senior citizens, and I can only imagine what others have experienced dealing with you. I hope you understand that is common courtesy to respect all customers regardless of how important your text messages are. I genuinely hope you’re able to fix whatever it is you’re going through.

What has happened to our Safeway? Most days I go around 9 am or after work there are no registers open. I've had a cart full of food a couple of times thinking it was just my luck but this has become the norm. I don't even see hiring signs. The lack of available cashiers is unacceptable. Who is managing this store? Can some of the stocking staff serve as cashiers? The staff are pleasant and most days the produce is high quality but I'll have to use Safeway as a quick stop and travel to Giant or Harris Teeter for weekly grocery shopping. Customers need a discount on the days the store is short staffed since we have to scan the groceries, bagged them then wait for someone to fix every pop-up message.

This location is huge with plenty of parking, great customer service, a wide range of products and well stock every time I visited. Would like to give a special shoutout to Calvin R, who always has his department well put together and very helpful.
