Great local supermarket. They employee locals and provide a great service to the community. While they do not always have everything I'm looking for, I understand that they are doing their best to provide groceries to the entire city. The staff are friendly and helpful, particularly the bakery and deli. Groceries are reasonably priced and they often offer coupons in store and through their mobile app to offer additional savings to the community.

Shaw’s in Melrose, MA has perfected a business model that feels indistinguishable from exploitation. On average, prices here run 15–20% higher than surrounding grocery stores, and that’s before you factor in seasonal or holiday pricing—where things cross from “expensive” into outright unconscionable. During a period of real economic strain in 2025, this store appears either oblivious to or entirely uninterested in the realities faced by the community it serves. A particularly stark example: on Christmas Eve, my mother and I went in simply looking for a ham. Not a luxury item—just a normal, average-sized holiday staple. What we found instead were hams priced between $85 and $125, effectively pricing out ordinary customers from a basic family meal. That is not market fluctuation; that is opportunistic pricing taken to an extreme. Coffee pricing is equally indefensible. A 1 lb can priced at over $30, and ½ lb bags running $18.99, places even basic daily necessities behind an artificial paywall. This is not a premium store offering premium quality—it’s a standard supermarket charging luxury-tier prices without justification. Across the board, pricing here feels detached from reality and morally hollow, especially given the economic pressure many families are under. This Shaw’s is not merely overpriced—it operates in a way that erodes trust and undermines the basic social contract a grocery store has with its community.

Don’t shop here ! I recently purchased a bag of frozen shrimp at the Melrose store. About a week later there was a FDA recall on the shrimp because they may be radioactive. I brought the bag back to the service desk and the manager , an older short lady said that they didn’t sell any of the radioactive shrimp. I told her that the new recall was dated 12-19 and was on the news. She said thy didn’t receive any email from the FDA, which in this current administration I don’t find that hard to believe at all. I told her I was not going to eat radioactive shrimp. She said of course not. The lady behind the counter seemed annoyed and repeated that they didn’t receive any email and I offered to show her the FDA web site on the recall but she again repeated the email line. I asked her to credit back my card I used and she said she would need a receipt. Of course I didn’t save a week old food shopping receipt and she said she could only give me a gift card for the amount. Since I won’t be shopping here ever again I really didn’t want a gift card but had no other choice. Don’t shop here ! Shouldn’t be a hard time getting your money back for radioactive shrimp. Not great customer service.
