A good introduction to Indian fusion dishes. It’s been surprisingly hard to find upscale Indian spots in Boston, but places like this seem to be popping up lately. Most of the Indian restaurants I’ve tried rely pretty heavily on MSG, so when I heard they were doing a mix of fusion dishes and cleaner, more elevated takes on classics, I wanted to give it a shot. Outside of tandoori chicken, butter chicken, and a handful of go-to curries, I haven’t explored much of the cuisine, so something “fusion” felt like a good way to try new flavors without getting blindsided by heavy spices or heat. We came on a Friday evening, and the place was almost empty. Got a comfy booth, and our server, Mike, was extremely friendly throughout the night. We went with the Chicken 65, Royale Saag Tikka, Tandoori salmon, and the spicy Goan linguine. Overall, everything was better than what I’ve had at most Indian spots around Boston. A lot of the entrées leaned softer on spice and heat, but it felt intentional. The kitchen asked us about our spice tolerance before anything came out, so it seemed like they were being careful with non-Indian diners. Chicken 65 - The yogurt marinade effect kicked in really nicely. Super moist and tender pieces, and coated with just enough spices to give it flavor without a drop of dipping sauces. Royale Saag Tikka - Spinach was very finely grated, which resulted in this super creamy and non-grainy curry. Compared to the paneer (cheese) version I usually have, the chicken didn’t add a whole lot of flavor. Yet, that subtle earthiness/bitterness was all it really needed to make a bowl of basmati rice taste good. Tumeric Tandoori Chicken - Really soft salmon, but the tumeric integration was too soft. Pairing it with garlic mashed potatoes instead of rice was a great choice, but it definitely could’ve used more spices here. Spicy Goan Linguine - The jumbo shrimp was impeccably cooked, but the Goan spices were barely noticeable. More like a light coconut cream linguine.

It was a weekend going for early (5ish) dinner prior to other nightly events. Walked in to the restaurant with about 3 other tables seated, service and menu came quickly, got our orders in, and it just went downhill from there. First off, that cocktail. I gather it is inspired with Indian flavors, and I can take a chili pepper kick in a drink. But this is straight up tobasco water. The guava part is visible but not detected in the mixture other than it's contribution to the thick-ish blob at the bottom. Not at all a fruity drink with a kick, more like torture solution to burn one's throat. In hindsight, I should have sent it back coz it was not enjoyable at all. Food was overall good, actually. Good portion, great flavors -- the salad, flatbread, and the goat entree. Didn't like the balsamic glaze in the Mediterranean salad though. Honestly, it was likely from a bottle, which is fine if it wasn't so overly sweet. As the restaurant started to fill out, it was getting harder to get service - basic things like asking for the check and to-go boxes. It took several tries and more than 15 minutes before we could go. Our waiter apologized for a busy night, which we appreciated. But the other guy we flagged down along the way seemed to just say yes and walked off without communicating to anyone who needs to receive the message. Strange. The digital menu is great, but the pictures all get flattened as we click into the item. Something that can use some adjustments.

Our server Mike was very kind and helpful. He would come often to make sure we were satisfied throughout our experience here. We had an overall great experience at The Silk Boston. Unfortunately, we ordered a to-go order as well, and happened to forgot to bring it with us on the way out. We called the restaurant regarding this issue, and the owner told me that he could bring the food to us. I thought that was extremely generous of him to do that as most places wouldn't go to those lengths. I highly recommend this Indian restaurant to anyone looking for Indian cuisine in the Boston area!

Some of the Indian dishes were tasty - the deconstructed Samosa Chaat in particular was very good. While I appreciate the fusion-style of the menu, the offerings felt a bit unfocused and random (ranging from flatbreads, to calamari to bao to saag paneer). The Silk may benefit from being more specific with what cuisines they are fusing and how the different dishes can build upon and compliment each other. The servers were very kind. However, the service in general was slow (it took very long for us to receive our drinks). The naan seemed undercooked and like it wasn't made in house. The atmosphere was lovely, with flowers hanging from the ceiling and detailing on the walls.

The food is decent considering Indian fusion food in Boston. The atmosphere was clean and well spruced. The only issue was the service and the delay in our food. The staff was courteous enough to provide us with a discount for the same, which we appreciate. This however doesn’t compensate for our time and experience waiting for 30 mins for the appetizers and 20 more minutes for the entrees. When we asked the server for the delay, the response lacked accountability. This restaurant has potential and I would highly recommend it for the food, but the staff for service, and for cooking should not be short handed. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is very hungry or has a time constraint. You will need to be very patient to get be satiated.
