My experience was downright traumatizing. Late March, early April, I go into @OnPointCU located in Safeway on 112th and Burton for normal banking business. My customer service person was a young lady named Paisley that had helped me a few times before. But on this particular visit she asked if she could "tell me a joke?" I said "sure" and she replied with this:
"What's the difference between a Jew and a boy scout? The boy scout comes back from camp."
That's a holocaust joke for those of you that haven't heard that one before.
I am a Jewish man. This person knows I'm Jewish.
I wasn't going to report her. But I ended up deciding to. When I did, I was told to speak with her branch manager Michelle. I spoke with Michelle over the phone and she asked me what had happened.
When I told her what had happened (I told her the joke verbatim) I was greeted with a very unwelcome laugh by her. I immediately asked her "What was so funny?" I said "There's nothing funny. Nothing I just said was funny."
She sounded lost for words and embarrassed when I said that to her and eventually agreed that "There's nothing funny Mr. Gavin." Michelle (along with a lot of very insincere apologies) told me that she would report it to her complaints department.
I received a call from one Amy Reeves SVP/SW Washington Regional Manager. Amy didn't do much want to hear my story so much as she wanted to tell me that it was going to be investigated. I felt that because she didn't want to hear what had happened that she didn't know. So I told her what had happened because I was very much under the impression that Michelle wasn't going to tem her boss that she laughed at the joke in question.
So I did. I wanted to make sure that the person doing the investigation knew I was laughed at by management over an anti-semitic, holocaust joke. When I mentioned being laughed at, she seemed in a hurry to get me off the phone.
So much so that I said "Well, thanks for blowing me off" and hung up.
I have been told that the investigation has been extended "due to unforseen circumstances." How long of an investigation do you have to have to determine whether one of your employees discriminated against me or not? Telling "jew jokes" to your Jewish customers is discrimination. Period.
I recently went in for a personal loan application with the same Michelle that laughed at me over the phone. I don't know too much about these things but given that Michelle had all my information in front of her, boasted my credit score improvement, my ALWAYS paying my credit card in full before it's due.
Let's just day she gave me zero reason to believe I'd be turned down. Not knowing how much to apply for, she asked a few questions and told me to "aim high."
So, I did by applying for a $15,000 loan. Michelle told me that there was a decent chance I wouldn't get the exact amount that I applied for but that I could always "counter offer" (the fact that term "counter offer" was used was another reason I didn't think I'd be turned down ) if what was offered back was deemed not enough for my needs.
I informed her that this was to help me get a car, get to a dentist and a doctor and since I currently don't have insurance at my place of employment.
Again, I would think that if Michelle was of the opinion that OnPoint couldn't help me given that she's a bank manager/ loan officer she'd know right there if that was the case.
Especially given that she was saying how long she knew everyone in the loan department and that they were "like family."
Needless to say, I was surprised to see that I was turned down flat.
I would've thought it was odd that I could be approved for a car loan for $10,000 (I couldn't find a car, so I let it expire) and not a personal loan after my credit had improved dramatically all my criterias (same job, same rent amount, no debt) were all the same.
But then again, I didn't mention being Jewish until after the car loan, and then end up being denied for a personal loan after I report the anti-semetic discrimination.
Seems fishy to me.

I have been a member of OnPoint for a little over two years now and every visit I make here the people are so kind to me. I recently needed to finance my leased vehicle and the service I received was exceptional. Leia Daranouvong was the person in charge of my loan and she made this experience significantly less stressful for a first time borrower. Overall, this credit union has never failed to be thoughtful and kind with the service they provide.
