KeyBank — Unbelievable incompetence and callous treatment of a vulnerable senior If I could give zero stars, I would. What my family has been through with KeyBank, particularly the Bellevue branch and the corporate consumer banking division, has been nothing short of appalling. My elderly father-in-law was the victim of a sophisticated scam earlier this year — the kind of situation where you hope your bank will act responsibly and help protect a vulnerable customer. Instead, KeyBank made a series of negligent mistakes that compounded the damage and ultimately left him without a bank account for his Social Security deposits, the only income he has to live on. It started when the Bellevue branch allowed known fraud to continue by attaching a compromised debit card to a new account, even after confirming that the old one had been used in a scam. When asked why she would do this, the banker simply said my father-in-law told her it was “okay.” No verification, no diligence, just blind trust of a defrauded senior. Later, another employee misinformed us that the old overdrawn account (over $6,000 due to the scam) was “completely separate” and under fraud review — only for us to find out that I had been wrongly added to that same account, making me personally liable for a $6,000 overdraft I had nothing to do with. Corporate’s response? “There’s this thing called human error.” That’s an actual quote from their own representative. Even after the branch manager acknowledged the bank’s mistake and “escalated” it, the situation dragged on for months. The fraud department “forgot” to file the claim, the charge-off department threatened to report the balance to credit bureaus, and we were given contradictory answers every time we called. Finally, after all this chaos that KeyBank created and failed to fix, they abruptly terminated my father-in-law’s account with almost no notice, leaving an elderly man — who depends on his Social Security to survive — with no way to receive his benefits. This entire ordeal has been a case study in how not to handle fraud victims. KeyBank’s right hand doesn’t know what its left hand is doing. Their policies are opaque, their communication is inconsistent, and their compassion for elderly clients is nonexistent. If you have an aging parent or relative, do not trust KeyBank with their money. Their incompetence and indifference will cost you sleep, sanity, and possibly your financial stability.

Absolutely not helpful. Stopped by because I was having problems accessing my account. They said I would have to call customer service. So I call customer service and they say I have to go to a branch. Wish the employees would take initiative to solve the problem quickly and not have the customer do all the work.
