Key companies provide investment management, retail and commercial banking, consumer finance, and investment banking products and services to individuals and companies throughout the United States and, for certain businesses, internationally. The company’s businesses deliver their products and services through branches and offices; a network of 1,200+ ATMs; telephone banking centers 800-KEY2YOU®; and a website, Key.com®, and mobile app that provides account access and financial products 24 hours a day.
I have had an extremely frustrating and unacceptable experience with KeyBank regarding a deceased family member’s account.
Washington State law (RCW 11.62) clearly states that once 40 days have passed and a valid Affidavit of Successor is provided, the bank must release the funds to the rightful heir. All legal requirements were met.
Despite this, both the branch and KeyBank corporate refused to accept the legally required affidavit. They provided no lawful explanation and repeatedly delayed the process, even after I showed them the statute.
Their refusal forced me to file complaints with both the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. No family should have to navigate regulators just to get a bank to follow state law.
This experience has caused unnecessary stress and hardship during an already difficult time. I hope KeyBank corrects its internal procedures and trains staff properly on Washington estate laws so other families do not go through this.
I’m updating my review to include a clear timeline, as this issue remains unresolved and has been extremely frustrating.
Timeline of Events:
After my family member passed away, KeyBank received a certified death certificate and froze the account.
More than 40 days after death, I presented a valid, notarized Affidavit of Successor under Washington State law (RCW 11.62), along with required identification, to close the account and release the funds.
The branch refused to act, stating I needed to open an “estate account” and that the affidavit required “legal review.”
I was told by staff that “Washington state law does not dictate our policy,” despite the statute being clear.
I escalated the issue to KeyBank corporate / executive offices, provided additional sworn documentation, and again cited the law.
Despite this escalation, the process continued to be delayed with no clear explanation of KeyBank’s actual Washington State policy.
Because the bank would not comply, I was forced to file complaints with the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
As of now, the account remains unresolved, and the funds have not been released.
Why this matters:
Washington law exists specifically to prevent unnecessary delays and probate in situations like this. All legal requirements were met, yet both the branch and corporate offices refused to follow the statute.
This happened during an already difficult time after the loss of a loved one and caused unnecessary stress and hardship. No family should have to involve regulators just to get a bank to follow clear state law.
I hope KeyBank corrects its internal procedures and properly trains staff on Washington estate laws so other families do not go through the same experience.

I’ve been trying to see how to go about filing a complaint for awhile now; so I’ll just put it here. First I feel completely disrespected & set back I went to your auburn location & your representative by the name of Allison was completely disrespectful so so rude; I’ll definitely be going to the better business bureau, corporate whoever ! First she was to busy having personal conversations and fraternizing with passing coworkers for me to even grab her attention, I proceeded to inform her I needed help with cashing a check , as I’m trying to get my ID she’s trying to argue me down, I told her I have it I have a big purse I’m a mom it’s a lot going on in here. After I give her my ID , she smirked at me , snatched it & at that point she wasting my time and all that for what? Do your job! So I just asked for my stuff back I would go elsewhere she laughed and tossed it back. That’s completely unacceptable!
