It seems they don't accept accounts from people "outside their area" which conveniently was a distance they couldn't explain, in this case it was 35 miles. Since this is a very tiny operating radius for a bank with multiple branches I immediately came to the conclusion that the statement was made up on the fly by the person in charge. Further I was told I should go back to where I live and open a bank account there, despite having 2 bank accounts already, where I live. Ironically, I work construction and am in their area Greenville, Anderson, and Columbia at least weekly. I have to say this is the first bank I have ever experienced that didn't want my money, which is extremely suspicious. I emailed them asking for clarification and still haven't heard back so I decided to provide them with a ringing endorsement for customer service. My assumption? I don't look like their "kind" of clientele, yes, one of those places. Fortunately they cured me of any desire to be associated with them. As a tip to others, definitely go to this bank if you enjoy interesting experiences in customer service, they are polite after all...
