I want to share my experience with TD Bank at the Ridge Avenue branch in Philadelphia because it left me questioning the safety of my family’s money and ethics of this branch. On June 2025, my 75 year old mother, who has limited English proficiency, was offered to open a 9 month CD. She was told she would earn $1,500 in interest on a $12,000 deposit at a rate of 3.75%. That number sounded way off so I checked the math and the actual interest would have been closer to $341. I assumed she might have misunderstood at first, but she was adamant that the $1500 figure was confirmed to her multiple times. Before I even looked into it further, I opened my TD Bank app and noticed that the $12,000 had already been withdrawn from our joint checking account and placed into a CD without my consent or signature. When my Mom went back to cancel, staff told her I had to physically come in that same day to sign or else there would be penalties. I spoke to the teller on the phone and he kept trying to make it sound like he did us a favor. I rushed to the branch to meet my Mom and the entire interaction felt deceptive and exploitative and the teller was visibly annoyed that I was even questioning him as he stumbled through a shaky explanation that had no substance. The story about the $1,500 kept changing. At first, the teller told my mom he never said $1,500. When I got there, he said he has no idea where that number came from. Later, he speculated that maybe they were talking about a different term length. If that were true, the term would have had to be at least 38 months to equate to $1500 and that was never discussed. He also stated that they usually print out official rate sheets, but for some "odd" reason, my Mom was only provided a hand written note. I wonder why? He claimed my signature was required to reverse the funds, yet they didn't require my signature to open this account to begin with. In other words, they committed an unauthorized transaction. When the funds were finally ready to be returned, the teller asked me to stay back while he completed the reversal with my Mom at the front desk. I ignored this request and accompanied my Mom to oversee the transaction. He then made a comment about us earning $2.43 in interest during the 2 days it sat in the CD, which only proves the account had been fully opened without my authorization. Otherwise, how would it generate any interest? The money was eventually put back without penalty, but the bigger problems were never addressed. How was this transaction allowed to happen without both account holders authorization? Why were handwritten numbers given instead of official rate sheets? (I have ALWAYS been given printed sheets every time I have ever gone into ANY bank, TD included) Why was my elderly mother pressured when she clearly did not understand all the details? Why did staff try to separate me from her during the reversal? I filed a complaint with the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) to get answers and received a response almost 60 days later. TD Bank’s response was a typical, generic letter saying the CD was closed and the money was returned. That was it. None of my detailed questions were answered and no explanation was given about what went wrong. There has been no confirmation that anything would change. The response was the epitome of corporate deflection of accountability, as I had already expected. While the financial impact was resolved, the biggest question is still unanswered: If a bank can move funds out of a joint account without full authorization from BOTH parties and then simply dismiss it with a letter, how can anyone feel "assured" that TD Bank actually has their customer's best interests in mind, as their response indicated? All logical reasoning points to 2 possible explanations: gross negligence and/or unethical business practices. If you or your family bank with TD, especially if you have elderly relatives or anyone who might be vulnerable, please be cautious.

Do not choose TD Bank if you travel internationally. Their total lack of protocol with international travel situations can leave you locked out of your account and unable to access your money - as has happened to me. They will routinely suspend a card for (valid) international travel expenses. Their customer service is unable to address concerns as their system is inflexible. In this day and age, this is unacceptable. Yeah, their customer service is “legendary” alright.

I was helped by Jasmine today. She was very helpful and sweet, easygoing but professional. I have had accounts with this bank and have used this branch for about 10 years and no issues! Clean and well maintained, friendly and helpful staff.
