Attempted to withdraw cash for medical expenses, manager Nick accused me of fraud. Fraud department called sender of incoming wire to verify legitimacy and it was verified as legitimate. He then placed a hard hold on the account which did not allow me to access funds, nor allow my incoming social security to be received nor any of my bills to be paid. Said they were closing account in 3 weeks and that I could not withdraw remaining balance, that they would mail me a check after the 3 weeks. No social security, no access to my money needed to live on. Nick just wanted to print out papers on scams, accusing me, and causing closure of my account.
Beyond the well-known “fake accounts” scandal, Wells Fargo has been implicated in several other fraud or misconduct issues over the years. Here’s a breakdown of some of the biggest ones
1. Auto-Insurance Fraud (“Collateral Protection Insurance” / CPI)
Regulators found that Wells Fargo forced a large number of auto-loan customers to buy auto insurance (CPI) that they didn’t need.
In some cases, customers already had their own insurance, but Wells Fargo still placed duplicate coverage, increasing their monthly payments.
This led to delinquencies and even wrongful repossessions: over 20,000 vehicles were reportedly repossessed because of the unnecessary insurance.
Wells Fargo paid about $80 million in refunds / account adjustments to impacted customers.
2. Mortgage Lending / FHA Fraud
Wells Fargo admitted to certifying that certain mortgage loans were eligible for FHA (Federal Housing Administration) insurance when they were not.
As a result, they agreed to a $1.2 billion settlement with the U.S. government.
3. Systemic Consumer-Financial Abuses (Auto Loans, Mortgages, Deposit Accounts)
More recently, the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) ordered Wells Fargo to pay $3.7 billion for widespread mismanagement.
The abuses included:
Wrongful repossessions of cars.
Misapplication of mortgage payments / wrongful denials of mortgage modifications, sometimes resulting in foreclosure.
Surprise overdraft fees (even when customers had enough funds when the transaction was authorized).
Freezing of consumer accounts based on faulty fraud filters, in some cases locking people out for weeks. THIS IS THIS CASE, Wells Fargo still has not reformed even after massive fines.
4. Regulatory / Investor Disclosure Issues
According to reports / lawsuits, Wells Fargo’s illegal auto-insurance practices were known internally at high levels, but they failed to control them.
The bank has also faced shareholder lawsuits around their disclosures of compliance risks
Why These Matter
These scandals show a pattern: not just one-off misconduct in sales, but systemic problems across different business lines (auto lending, mortgages, deposit accounts).
They highlight weak risk management: in several cases, the bank didn’t correctly monitor third-party vendors (for insurance), or failed to put in safeguards to protect customers.
The financial impact has been massive: billions in regulatory fines and customer redress.

Complete incompetence. I made an appointment to close my checking account. There was a positive balance. The customer relations specialist "hit the wrong button" and was therefore unable to cut the check for my checking account balance! I'm told nothing could be done. Almost four weeks and another wasted Saturday after trying to fix the mess created at Hollywood Branch at a different branch, I'm still without the balance from my checking account and apparently no end to the saga in sight. It is a powerless feeling as a citizen going up against a mammoth entity like Wells Fargo, this review is about all I can do.
