DO NOT trust this bank! I opened an account with Key in 1997 as my first bank account when I went to college. KeyBank was big where I am from in Ohio. I stuck with them in Bounder CO for 10 years.
But moving to Portland has changed my banking. Once, over 10 years ago, I was given $100 less cash than counted. I realized it after leaving. When I returned the bank teller denied it. I pushed further and the manager counted the total money that teller had and realized they were $100 over. They apologized and gave me my money.
Another time I deposited over $500 in-person at the branch and noticed later my account balance was unchanged. They deposited it into another woman's account with the same name. After those two mistakes I opened an account at Well Fargo and moved most of my money there. I kept a small amount at KeyBank since it's close to my parent's home in Ohio and they can deposit birthday checks there, etc.
Last week I deposited $21,000 cashier's check early on a Monday morning. I let the banker helping me know I had written a few checks totaling that sum to pay for taxes and need the money to be liquid, fast. I offered to actually deposit cash if needed. Then, the next day I was left a voicemail from Christina with no explanation right before close. I immediately called back and was sent to voicemail. I requested someone call me ASAP, especially if it was related to my recent deposit. I received no call back. The following Friday afternoon I received a call back from Christina saying that my deposit was on hold until 10/29 (10 days after depositing a cashier's check from myself, to myself was deposited). So, right before close five days after my deposit I'm being told that my checks written for taxes might bounce. I had only used Key this one time because I had a check book with them and not Well Fargo. When I asked whether the hold could be lifted, etc, Christina knew nothing about the process. She put me on hold for 10 minutes waiting for her supervisor. When disconnected she did not bother to call me back even though it was clear this was an urgent matter and she knew my number (as she had just called me). I called back and waited again before speaking with the manger, Stephanie. After explaining the issue a second time, Stephanie had no idea or ability to help. I then requested her supervisor. Kip called me to explain that nothing could be done to lift the hold, expedite the hold, or return my money to me. He also let me know that if the checks bounce in the10-days Key puts it on hold, Key is highly unlikely to reimburse me for their mistake. So, it's 4:30 on a Friday and too late for me to withdraw a large sum of money from Wells Fargo, again, to drop off at a bank I don't trust. If there is a place I don't feel comfortable depositing $20k cash, it's KeyBank. Pretty ironic that a bank would run this way. I guess Key must be hiring Comcast employees. They do the minimum and do it poorly.
For reference, I've now had issues at two different branch offices over the course of 15-years in Portland. So, this is not an issue with one employee, or one office.
An update. My checks bounced due to the hold I was not informed about when depositing the funds. When I called to speak with the manager (who had promised to "try" to remove chargers, if incurred) I was put on hold 10 minutes and told I get a call back sometime within six hours. Also, the apology for the hold did not address the failure to call me back for days, or notify me of a potential hold for a large deposit. I could have deposited a smaller sum over the course of three days, deposited cash, or many other alternates that I did not do because I was not informed of the hold before depositing the money. Then Key chose not to communicate afterwards either. Now I'm going to have to pay for three returned checks despite their acknowledgment of making several mistakes. Untrustworthy bank and poor service.
