I accompanied my dad to the local TD branch on 3rd Line for his appointment. Tammy, his regular personal banker, asked him to come in and even sent the confirmation email noting the day and time. Instead of Tammy, Kevin Zhoo saw us. He mentioned he was new and just started in June. I found Kevin to be both patient and courteous. My 85-year-old, hard of hearing dad speaks loud becasue he thinks that since he's hard of hearing, others must be too. When we sat down, the first thing my dad said to Kevin was that the instructions regarding the investment's maturity date were clearly outlined on the confirmation document, and he further mentioned there was no need for him to come in person to speak to a personal banker.
When I saw the document that dad produced to show Kevin, it was true; it did say that. Hence this meeting was unnecessary. I found it appalling since I had to take time off work to accompany my dad when we didn't actually need to come in. After our discussion, we got up to leave and we thanked Kevin, I walked out ahead of dad. When I looked back, to see how far dad was, I saw Tammy emerge from her office both laughing and silently clapping as she immediately entered Kevin's.
I found this utterly distateful. Before leaving Kevin's office, my dad even waved and said hello to Tammy. This is how the so-called "professional associate" behaved. However, Kevin's gesture was not unprofessional at all. Like me, I imagine he understood that our diverse cultures emphasized respecting our parents, both in public or at home.
