  Capital One — A Cautionary Tale for Loyal Customers I’ve been a long-time Capital One customer with a checking account, savings, multiple credit cards, and even a car loan. Up until recently, I would have and often times did recommended them without hesitation. That changed today. My brand-new debit card — which I received as part of their recent transition — was declined at a merchant I’ve used for years, despite having more than enough funds in my account. Confused and embarrassed, I called customer service. What I learned was infuriating. Unbeknownst to me (and likely most customers), Capital One has now merged with Discover, and debit transactions are being routed through the Discover network, a network many merchants simply don’t accept. The result? Your payments can be declined, and you’ll be left standing there with a useless card and no explanation. When I called and escalated to a manager, the best advice I got was: “You should have a backup plan since some merchants don’t take Discover.” That's not a solution, that’s a shrug. This change was clearly made without customer interest in mind. It’s frustrating, disruptive, and frankly, insulting to those of us who trusted Capital One to handle our finances reliably. If this is the “new and improved” service model post-merger, I’ll be moving my accounts elsewhere. Capital One — you just lost a loyal customer.

  Conroy at the Southampton branch is great! He was the most helpful, kind and polite person at the bank. I would give him 5 stars and the bank 1 if I could.
