I have been a customer of this particular branch since 2013, and I also maintained accounts with its sister bank, Amegy. Over the years, my savings accounts grew to six figures. When I opened these accounts, I made it clear to the bank that I am a Greek citizen residing outside the United States. When my last debit card expired, I had problem getting a new one due to the cancellation of a PO BOX used as my main correspondence address. I explained to the bank that the PO BOX had been canceled by the Post Office post COVID and asked them to send the debit card to my home address, already in their records. They refused, claiming they could not verify my contact details, since their system cannot send confirmation text messages to phone numbers outside the US. I suggested calling me on the phone or setting up a Teams meeting and they refused. They asked me to send them my new contact details with a document notarized by a USA notary, which I did at significant cost to me. Two months later they told me that they had changed their mind, and the notarized document went to the bin. Subsequently, I was unexpectedly locked out of my account and lost all access to my funds. Despite numerous phone calls, I was stunned to hear that my funds had supposedly been withdrawn and my account closed without my knowledge. Any further attempts to communicate with the bank proved futile. I was directed to contact a specific individual by phone, but each time I called, I only reached voicemail (refer to the attached excerpt). In the end, I filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Once NSB received the complaint, they responded promptly, explaining that they had unilaterally closed my account due to suspected fraud and mailed a check to my previous address—specifically, the PO BOX I had already informed them was no longer valid. Eventually, the bank refunded my entire savings by sending a new check to my current home address, effectively acknowledging my original claim; nevertheless, my account remained closed. While this action may be legally permissible, it raises important ethical questions. The CFPB played a crucial role in resolving my dispute with the bank, which had been unwilling to meet its responsibilities. This ordeal has caused considerable inconvenience, leaving me unable to access my refunded funds for several months. The experience underscores a disconnect between bank policies and genuine customer care that calls for attention. I am grateful for the help provided by the CFPB.
