  I went into Wells Fargo to ask why there was a hold on a check I had deposited that was already showing as cleared. Instead of getting a clear explanation, I was told by the teller—impatiently, and while interrupting me—that “Wells Fargo is for-profit” and therefore they would naturally pass the risk on to me. That was the only answer I was given at the counter. When I finally called customer service, I learned that under Federal Reserve rules, any check over $6,750 is automatically held for one week—never less, never more. That was the explanation I needed all along. Instead, the teller deflected with a profit-motive excuse and "it's the back office" claim. The reality is this: Wells Fargo chooses to put the burden of “exposure” onto its customers. Rather than taking responsibility or providing clarity, I was met with impatience at the branch level and only got answers by pressing through to customer service. For a bank of this size, treating customers this way is unacceptable.
