A not-for-profit financial cooperative owned by its members, SECU has been providing employees of the State of North Carolina and their families with consumer financial services for over 80 years.
Terrible customer service. We have had three mortgages with SECU over the past seven years. We have never been late on a mortgage payment in that same time. I received a call from Haley stating that SECU had not received our mortgage payment, which is automated. She advised checking with our bank to confirm it was dispensed and if it was, to call the SECU branch as sometimes the local branches may cash it late. We confirmed the check was sent in time on our end, but nevertheless, we received a 26 dollar late fee. When we called the Chapel Hill SECU branch to explain the situation, they refused to reverse the late fee even though they cashed the check late on their end. They kept passing us off to different departments, including debt collection. However each department kept saying it was not within their authority to reverse any late fees, they couldn’t confirm it wasn’t a post office error, etc.
In an effort to sort this issue out today, I called this branch and it rang endlessly. Somebody picked up, who wasn’t from the branch, transferred me allegedly to the branch. I ended up speaking to LaShonda who asked a supervisor, who refused to reverse the late fee. When I asked who the supervisor was, she couldn’t specifically tell me his name because she stated every time they call it’s a different supervisor. She could give me her supervisor’s name, Jeffrey. Then she offered to transfer me to the branch, which I thought I was talking to anyway. I accepted, and after being on hold for another five minutes, Karen from mortgage services answered. She is also, unsurprisingly, not at the intended branch. She also could not reverse the late fee. The best she could recommend was going down in person and asking for a manager. She could not offer any contact information for a manger there.
So in short, if you would like to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars into a bank that proceeds to slap you with arbitrary late fees due to uncontrollable circumstances even after having a perfect payment history, this is the bank for you. Bonus points for nobody ever being around to pick up the phone and when they do, transferring you endlessly to more people who can’t remedy the situation.
I am incredibly disappointed at how they treat long term customers and would hesitate to do future business with them.

This location can't get it together. Barely answer phone, so you can't even get any help.

I have banked there for over 30 years. People are always courteous and helpful. My children bank there and my grandchildren have accounts there as well. I would rather bank here than in any commercial bank.
