This post is about a run-in that I had recently had with an employee of this business. Earlier this afternoon, I was visiting Gustavus Adolphus College with my younger sister, a newly admitted student there. As we were leaving the campus, I insisted that my younger sister take a picture near the college's banner. When we rounded the turn in our vehicle, we noticed two conspicuous "no parking" signs that prohibited us from parking on the narrow street. Therefore, I pulled my car into the Edward Jones parking lot and parked for 2 minutes (truthfully, 2 minutes) as my sister and I hurriedly crossed the 20-25 foot intersection to take a picture near the sign. Just as we got out of our car and crossed the intersection, an employee named Debbie opened the door to the business and shouted that we could not park there. We tried to respond to her but she shut the door immediately. Within 30 seconds, she opened the door again and threatened to have our vehicle towed for momentarily parking in the Edward Jones lot. Luckily for us, we had only been out of our car for 1 minute 30 seconds at this point and had finished taking the picture. We rushed back to our car and exited the lot in a time totaling no more than 2 minutes. As we drove away, I called the business and Debbie picked up the phone. I introduced myself and tried to discuss the incident but she began talking over me and would not allow me to get a word in edgewise with her. She even offered to let me speak to her supervisor but hung up the phone instead. This post is NOT meant to serve as retaliation against the business for Debbie's hostility toward my sister and I but it is a warning to all prospective students, parents, families, and friends of Gustavus Adolphus College who may want to take pictures near that sign. If you do, you may be chastised, berated, or threatened by the owner of this business (or their employees, in our case) for briefly using their lot to safely cross the street and take pictures with your excited student. My advice to the business is to have a little more tact and decency toward those of us who are not from the area and are not causing you any harm by momentarily parking in an otherwise empty lot. This was an ugly situation that I hope is never repeated with another family ever again.
