After getting through the teller process, he said he had to have the check confirmed by a manager. OK. Fair enough. He handed it to a man in a back office. And that was it for awhile. I waited... After some time, I asked the teller if it was almost done. He went to check. Not done. I waited. Then awhile later I asked the teller if it was done. He checked. Not done, but (with a little smirk) he said he can give me my check back if I don't want to wait. No explanation or details. Those were my choices. If I wanted the money in my account, I'd have to wait it out. I didn't understand the holdup. No one told me what the man in the locked office was doing. (Yes, the teller had to get in with a code.) A woman came up to me to "handle" me. She started explaining in the "I am a professional customer service manager but I really hate people" tone. And of course, her explanation didn't explain, rather begged more questions, for instance...the only thing I wanted to know...what was going on and how long would this take? To which she answered, it can take 10 minutes or 3 hours. (?!??!!!) Was I just hanging out on their time, without anyone telling me? She said they had to verify the check. Fine. But do I have to wait there while they do it? They'd said I wouldn't have access to more than $400 until they did, which I have in the bank without this large deposit. I ended up leaving, with a check they had me endorse but wouldn't deposit. Luckily, my endorsement didn't include Wells Fargo. I can go elsewhere for my more lucrative bank deposits. UPDATE: I went to my US Bank and it took me less than 5 minutes to make this deposit. Went up to the teller/didn't need a deposit slip/verified my ID/she entered/handed me the deposit receipt. The end. There wasn't an issue, not even a comment or raised eyebrow. Just business. (I forgot to include that when I handed the check to the teller at Wells Fargo, he actually asked me if I'd gotten the check for selling my house! I was surprised that he was inquiring about how I'd gotten the money. I just said, "No.") Anyway, I called Wells Fargo and explained what I'd been trying to do and asked if there were any business practices or banking practices that would require WF to make me wait while they verify a large check for deposit and he said absolutely not.
