This is the third time I've been to the Copley Mall store and the employees aren't working their scheduled hours! It's a shame.

I didn’t even exchange money here — I was simply trying to find the German Consulate inside the Copley Mall, which is an absolute maze. This was a critical, time-sensitive moment: the consulate closes very early, and I was there to pick up my passport and research visa for urgent international work travel. There was no one else around to ask, so I approached the counter very politely and said, “I just have a quick question — I’m so sorry to bother you, could you please point me toward the German Consulate?” The man working behind the counter at approximately 2:40 p.m. on September 19 — he was tall, with shoulder-length dreadlocks, and was speaking with a female customer — turned to me with visible anger and hostility. He snapped at me, in a loud, cutting tone: “Do I look like I have time to answer random questions?” The way he said it — his tone, body language, and expression — carried a clear “get lost” message, as if I had done something terribly wrong just by asking. There was also a subtle but unmistakable tinge of misogyny in his response. I am a small woman, and his height and aggression created a very unsettling dynamic — his behavior felt not only dismissive but also intimidating, as though my urgency and presence were beneath his respect. I was stunned. I was visibly stressed and sweating because I was late and couldn’t find the consulate, and it would have taken him two seconds to either say, “I’m sorry, I don’t know,” or simply point me in the right direction. Instead, he chose to publicly belittle and dismiss me, while I was being as polite and respectful as possible. It was obvious that this is someone who deeply despises his job and takes that resentment out on anyone who crosses his path. This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable for anyone representing a business, especially one that handles people’s money. Copley Mall staff are usually helpful, so this was a shocking exception. Management needs to address this immediately — no customer should ever be treated this way. Someone who so openly resents their job should not be in a customer-facing role at all. For context: I am a university professor in Boston and was traveling on a research visa. This was a crucial step before leaving the country for my work. The stakes could not have been higher, and to be treated with open hostility and intimidation at such a moment was deeply distressing and unprofessional.

I arrived at 10:30 to their Copley location to find no one at the desk, (which was supposed to open at 10AM), with 3 other people waiting. After calling their customer service line, we were told no one would be there until at least 3:00pm! Reportedly due to an "emergency", which I'm guessing was the nice 70+ deg. sunny weather today. I wasted an hour of my morning and $6 in subway fees to get no currency. Looking at many other reviews, workers at this location no-show on a frequent basis. CXI management needs to get a better handle on the issues with this location and the workers they have staffing it, which is a prime city location that many people use. If no one can show up to work, which clearly happens often, they should have an arrangement with Mall management to place a sign on the booth that no attendant here today so people aren't waiting like idiots and wasting more of their day. I ended up speaking with Andrew of DTC, who manages this business location. He said they might be able to waive my transaction fee since I wasted $6 in subway fares. If I do end up getting there when someone is actually working, and I receive the currency I requested and they honor the waived transaction fee, I might up my review to higher stars. But for now, this is a 1-star establishment. Clearly CXI management needs to look at their Boston city location and make some much needed improvements in customer service and reliability. I can't speak for their Burlington, MA location, but I'd be sure to call there before wasting 30 min. in the car to drive to another unmanned CXI service location!

Frequently Asked Questions About Currency Exchange International

What is an exchange rate and how does it work?

An exchange rate between two currencies is the price of a country's currency in relation to another currency (called a currency pair). An exchange rate thus has two components, the domestic currency and a foreign currency. Currencies can be quoted either directly (how much 1 domestic currency unit, for example: $1USD is X amount of Euros, is worth in the foreign currency) or indirectly (how much 1 foreign currency unit, for example: 1 Euro is X amount of USD, is worth in the domestic currency).

What is CXI’s Best Rate Guarantee?

This guarantee means CXI's company-owned location will match or beat the exchange rate given by any local bank or airport for the same product and service on the same day and time of the exchange. If you find a better rate within the same city and on the same day as the CXI branch you plan to exchange with, notify the CXI branch. Our branch will confirm that the rate you present is for the same amount and currency as you plan to exchange with CXI. Once confirmed with the bank or airport, CXI will match or beat the given rate. This is only valid prior to an exchange and is not valid after an exchange has already been completed. Best Rate Guarantee cannot be applied to online purchases for Home Delivery Please note that the policies of affiliate-owned locations listed on our website may vary – please contact affiliate-owned locations at their listed phone number to confirm whether they offer this Best Rate Guarantee.
