My recent experience with Central Bank and Trust has been nothing short of appalling and deeply troubling. A person of color, attempting to deposit a legitimate six-figure U.S. government-issued check, was subjected to egregious racial profiling, discrimination, and violations of federally protected banking rights.
Rather than handling the deposit through standard due diligence, as required by federal banking regulations, bank staff chose to treat the individual with unwarranted suspicion—accusing them of being affiliated with an “unknown organization” and implying criminal intent without any valid basis. This behavior reflects a gross misuse of authority and a clear act of bias based on race and perceived socioeconomic status.
The individual’s legal right to access and deposit government-issued funds was infringed upon when Central Bank staff refused to process the deposit in accordance with regulations under the Federal Reserve Act and anti-discrimination provisions of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA). Instead, they enforced arbitrary internal policies that contradicted federal standards, elevating discriminatory bank protocol above lawful financial procedure.
This is not only morally indefensible but may also constitute a breach of federal law. Banks are legally obligated to treat all customers equitably, regardless of race, national origin, or the amount of funds involved. Regulation B (ECOA) specifically prohibits creditors—including banks—from discriminating in any aspect of a credit transaction on the basis of race or color, along with S.E.C.’s regulations.
Rather than following these guidelines, Central Bank and Trust made this individual feel like a criminal simply for having access to a large sum of legitimate money. The humiliation, bias, and disrespect shown forced the customer to close existing accounts and walk away feeling unwelcome, mistreated, and targeted.
This incident is a shameful failure of both ethics and compliance. I urge Central Bank and Trust to launch a full investigation into this discriminatory conduct, hold those (relationship banker, retail banking officer, SVP and a few others) responsible accountable, and implement mandatory federal compliance and anti-bias training immediately. Until such action is taken, I strongly caution others—especially members of marginalized communities—against trusting this institution with their business.
