First Interstate Bank is a community banking organization headquartered in Billings, Montana. With nearly 300 locations across our footprint, First Interstate is still run on the same principles as when it was founded by Homer Scott, Sr. in Sheridan, Wyoming in 1968 – to take the best possible care of our customers, our employees, and the places we call home.
Today, our dedication to our founder’s values of customer satisfaction, creative management, productive employees, shareholders’ value and community involvement remains unwavering. Driven by strong corporate and family values, First Interstate is committed to providing exemplary customer service, exceeding customer expectations with our products and services, and supporting the communities we serve.
I recently visited the branch to withdraw funds from my children’s savings accounts to move them into investments. I have three accounts, and the process took over an hour and a half—a clear indication of inefficiency. During my visit, I specifically asked how much money I needed to leave in the accounts to prevent them from being closed, as I still have direct deposits set up. I was assured by the branch staff that I could withdraw the full balance, leaving the accounts at zero, as long as new deposits were made within 60 days.
Imagine my frustration when, less than two weeks later, I discovered that this information was entirely incorrect. All three accounts were closed despite following the guidance provided to me. This demonstrates a serious lack of knowledge and accountability at the branch level, leaving me to deal with the consequences of their mistake.
To make matters worse, the bank’s online services are frequently unreliable, adding another layer of inconvenience to an already frustrating experience. As a customer managing multiple accounts, I expected a higher standard of service and coordination. Instead, I’ve encountered miscommunication, inefficiency, and systems that are unable to meet basic expectations.
This experience has been beyond disappointing, and I cannot recommend this bank to anyone, especially those with complex banking needs.

0 stars really.. Since acquisition of Great Western Bank by Interstate Bank, my account was drained by misc fees that I was not aware of and not charged by Great Western. The new employee there was unable to find my account due to a system change. A small account I had used since high school. Stealing from your customers is not a good business model. I would never recommend this bank to anyone.

Coming from a small town, I’m used to walking into a bank where they knew my name when I walk in. I didn’t get that at any of the other banks around Des Moines that has the resources I need until I opened an account at Great Western.
Staff is pretty friendly, recognizes me, and ready to help instead of just seeing me as the next transaction. They also are a larger bank so they were able to provide some pretty competitive accounts rates while maintaining that small town customer service.
The only downside is that they aren’t open on Saturday, but there are plenty of other locations close by that are open on Saturday.

Had four unauthorized charges on my health savings account. They would not do anything about it! I ended up having to pay several hundred dollars for something that I did not authorize. The company that did the charges are all over the internet for doing this to others but the bank still said I have to pay! Poor excuse for customer service.
