I’ve been a customer of South State Bank for many years — through multiple name changes and ownerships — and have truly seen its ups and downs. After my divorce, I went through a tough period financially, but always managed to keep my account in good standing overall. Over the years, I’ve had to deal with several fraudulent charges, and the bank had to issue me multiple debit cards because of it. That’s part of what a bank is supposed to do: protect its customers. Unfortunately, it seems that level of care has changed. Without any warning, my account was recently closed. I received a letter in the mail the same day it happened — no opportunity to move my money or update my automatic payments. Everything was suddenly locked, leaving me scrambling to make sure my bills were paid and avoid late fees. It’s disappointing to see how much small-town banks have changed. They used to know their customers and stand by them through hard times. Now, it feels like they’re only focused on their bottom line. Grant Cardone said it best — banks today aren’t for long-term relationships anymore, only for short-term transactions before you invest elsewhere. Sadly, I have to agree.
