I opened a business checking account with Great Western Bank because, as a small business owner myself, I wanted to support a smaller bank with a more local feel. While the staff are friendly enough, the bank's systems are unreliable to the point of being unusable. On multiple occasions, I have tried to make online purchases with my Great Western business debit card, only to have the transactions decline inexplicably. Every time this has happened, there are more than sufficient funds in my account to cover the transaction I am trying to make. Additionally, many times when this happens, I am unable to reach anyone to figure out why, as their customer service 1-800 number is only staffed M-F during bank hours, unlike the 24 hour customer service lines that most banks have. Ask any entrepreneur and they'll tell you that business happens on the weekends, business happens at midnight or at 5 AM. Why not log into your account online and see if you can determine the problem that way, you might say. Hahahaha, if only it were that simple. Great Western's online banking system is probably down as often as it is running. In addition, transfers from my credit card processing company that are supposed to be instant are horribly inconsistent. Even though my credit card merchant shows the transfers as instantly complete (including transaction ID and confirmation numbers), sometimes the payments will hit my account immediately, other times they will take several hours. Again, because customer service hours are so limited and the online banking is often down, there is often no way to figure out what is holding up my payments. When I do need to deposit cash, I need to make sure to make time between 9 and 5 Monday through Friday to do this. No Saturday hours here. No "Open until 6 to serve those who work during the day." I really wish I could work with this bank, but as my business continues to grow, it's becoming impossible to do what I need to do with Great Western Bank. When my venture capital funding comes in, I'll certainly not be depositing it here.

If your looking for a bank with that hometown feel, then this is the bank for you. The staff is extremely polite and courteous. However, the hours are very limited. They are only open Monday-Friday until 5pm. My wife attempted to make a mobile deposit and she was told 3 days later there was "no record of it." So if you don't mind the hours, and the fact that they might be a little behind the times when it comes to their app, then it will be good for you.
