  I originally contacted a Mass Mutual rep for life insurance benefits to be used as a retirement vessel and then later short-term disability insurance. As a woman who is still in the process of family planning and a federal employee, it became abundantly clear the afternoon of 2/7/19, during a call with the life insurance and short-term disability reps, that Mass Mutual cannot represent my needs. Despite stating several times, the Federal Government does not offer short-term disability, the rep calculated my disability benefit, after 90 days wait, at maybe 20% of my pay. The benefit barely covered my mortgage, let alone my law school loans. The rep was insistent that their plan, coupled with my retirement benefits would make me near whole. I am shopping around a s/t disability policy to cover me for s/t disabilities! So I can take time to recover from my s/t disability and not suffer too great of a loss of pay. This plan is not l/t disability and the Federal Government, which I stated multiple times, offers Feds a l/t disability group policy. And Social Security is too unreliable and way to backlogged to count on if you become disabled and need income in the interim and for a s/t period of time. I have worked on SSA appeals in Federal Court - the backlog is years. Do not shoehorn my needs into your product. I need a s/t disability policy that covers my needs and a little wants after a reasonable waiting period and does not need to couple with retirement and SSA. The s/t rep a couple of weeks ago thought I was already disabled because he made an assumption because I was off work. Nah, I was furloughed for 35 days as a non-essential Federal civil servant due to the Shutdown after the Continuing Resolution to fund many federal agencies expired at 12 midnight on Sat 12/22/18. I believe the 1 yr wait period benefit was much better for my needs. There are s/t disability plans that cover pregnancy - not just complications due to pregnancy or birth. So the rep instead of saying Mass Mutual does not cover pregnancy to allow you X number of weeks away from work to recuperate, even if no complications, and bond, attempted to gaslight me and inform me that there are no s/t disability policies out there like that. Then he attempted to transfer his due diligence upon me and told me to inform him of said plan. Well, I know as former Treasurer of AFGE Local 4719, we liaised such plans to employees and the insurance carrier. I knew of colleagues that benefited from said policies and they did not suffer pregnancy complications. One colleague took out the s/t disability policy and right after the waiting period, she was pregnant. A simple Google search will yield like results. Maybe these plans are few and far between but they exist. I informed my original Mass Mutual rep that due to today's call, the lack of full conversation and anticipation of my needs, lack of understanding re: the intricacies of Federal benefits and the disrespect shown to me a woman and women who family plan/will have children biologically, that I will no longer consider Mass Mutual for any of my insurance needs. I will look for an insurer that understands the complications of Federal benefits
