Today I attempted to open an account for my 10-year-old disabled daughter and had one of the most frustrating banking experiences I’ve ever encountered.
I currently work two jobs and prefer to keep separate accounts for budgeting and savings purposes. Since this credit union is located on my college campus ,I decided to open an account for myself which I had done online a week ago.
Anyway while there, I also requested to open an account for my daughter so her disability benefits could be deposited by the state.
Despite providing a valid SSDI award letter clearly stating that I am her representative payee, I was treated as though I was attempting to commit fraud. I even offered to provide an updated award letter directly from the SSDI website with today’s date, but the clerk insisted that it was “not enough” and required a document he could not clearly name, describe, or provide an example of.
When I asked what additional documentation was needed, I was told my daughter could not have an account because she is not a Riverside resident. I explained that I am her parent, I attend a university in Riverside and that she could legally be added as a co-owner regardless. I also provided additional documentation, including proof that she receives riverside IHSS services , along with her birth certificate, mines/her ocial Security information, and my identification.
Throughout the interaction, I felt interrogated rather than assisted. The experience felt less like customer service and more like dealing with law enforcement. At one point, I genuinely felt I needed a disability advocate present.
Eventually—and without any clear explanation as to what changed—the clerk agreed to open the account. However, once the process was completed, there was no explanation of mobile banking access, whether the accounts were linked, or how to manage the account moving forward. As of now, I still don’t see anything reflected and remain confused about the status of the account.
To make matters worse, my driver’s license and debit card (which was charged to open her account) were not returned to me. The clerk had to run outside to my car to give them back after I was already leaving.
This entire experience was unnecessary, confusing, and discouraging. My advice: stop making processes more difficult than they need to be, especially for parents of disabled children. Improve customer service training, and if a staff member is unsure of policies or procedures, they should immediately involve a supervisor rather than placing the burden on the customer.
