Making the decision to transition my father from my personal care into assisted living and memory care was one of the most difficult choices our family has faced. I utilized the service "A Place for Mom" to efficiently assess his care needs and budget, which streamlined the initial search.
Brookdale was the first facility to reach out, and the positive experience began immediately with my meeting with Melissa Sills. Melissa provided unparalleled caring, understanding, and professional support, guiding my family through this emotionally tough process with immense grace. Shortly after, meeting Nurse Sherri solidified my decision. This duo demonstrates an extraordinary combination of genuine compassion and professional expertise. Their immediate support made us feel completely secure, leading me to cancel all other scheduled tours.
During my father's first month, the standard of life and community has been exceptional. Brookdale actively fosters a vibrant, inclusive environment, evidenced by the wonderful events they host, including a memorable Veterans Day luncheon and a warm, invited Thanksgiving lunch that my father and I enjoyed immensely.
The entire staff maintains a consistently upbeat and welcoming demeanor; they are always smiling and greeting residents and guests, indicating a high level of job satisfaction and commitment to their roles. All residents I have observed, in both the assisted living and memory care sections, appear clean, well-cared for, and, most importantly, happy.
While my father is still adjusting, the staff has been proactive in supporting both him and our family through this period. I have immense peace of mind knowing he is in a safer, more controlled environment, receiving skilled medical attention from such a loving and capable team.
I wholeheartedly and confidently recommend Brookdale. For anyone navigating the indescribably difficult process of selecting care for a loved one, trust your initial gut feeling. Brookdale stepped up, provided immediate leadership, and offered the comprehensive support my family and I desperately needed during this monumental transition.

Care above and beyond expectations. Brookdale West Ashley in Charleston is an assisted living community my Mom has called home since May of this year (2023). The people here have quickly become a part of our family. The staff/caregivers take the time to get to know the residents personally. The residents of Brookdale are welcoming and supportive of each other and especially of new residents. Above and beyond the daily needs provided (meals, meds, assistance), there is an active social and activity schedule that has something for everyone. There are regularly scheduled trips to stores, restaurants, parks, and also activities (bingo, board games, puzzles, movies, music, and painting just to name a few). My Mom has always loved flowers and gardening. Chelsey, the activity coordinator, provided Mom a personal trip to shop for/buy some plants and supplies. She then supported Mom as she potted flowers and plants on Brookdale’s porch. This was pure joy for Mom. Mom enjoys watching the plants grow and keeping them watered. The Brookdale Facebook post of a video of Mom (captioned Gardening with Carolyn) shows just how much Mom enjoyed getting to plant flowers again. Mom loves her new home.

Do not send your loved ones here!!! If I could issue a warning to anyone, I would tell them to never send their family here. The nursing supervisor of the memory care side of the building, when my grandmother asked for help up to use the restroom, raised her voice to her and told her to "just pee in your diaper!" and refused to help her up. My grandmother had a care plan that was frequently not followed, such as giving her assistance with showering and toileting, escorting her to meals and activities, helping with dressing, etc. These are the basic things that you expect people to follow and it's heartbreaking to find out that they aren't doing it and are neglecting your family. Suddenly, and without any known cause, my grandmother suffered from extreme weakness and things that she was able to do the day before, she was suddenly unable to do them. Instead of offer any advice or increased assistance, they required her to have a private home health aide 24/7 - at our expense. We understand their situation and so we complied. Concerned for her health though, we had her sent to the ER. While in the hospital, the executive director issued my grandmother an immediate eviction and told us she was unable to return to Brookdale when she left the hospital. Suddenly, and without warning, an 87 year old woman in a wheelchair found herself homeless. THIS is how you can expect to be treated. THIS is the compassion level you will be given. Just Google the news articles about this facility and you'll see what else goes on behind closed doors. Just don't do it!
