About

Church
*Please visit the temple website for open hours and appointments.* Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are considered houses of God, a place of holiness and peace separate from the preoccupations of the world. They provide a place where Church members make formal promises and commitments to God. They are also the place where the highest sacraments of the faith occur — the marriage of couples and the "sealing" of families for eternity. Temples serve as the only place where ceremonies such as baptism and eternal marriage can be performed on behalf of those who have died. Temples point Latter-day Saints to Jesus Christ and their eventual life with Him.

It was so beautiful, the grounds were awesome and the decor was Aztec like and I could feel the spirit so strongly there. It was such an amazing experience.

TLDR: did not feel the Holy Ghost like other temples, potential racial discrimination. As someone who has been LDS her entire life, I’m not sure why but something felt very wrong when I was here for the open house. I did not get the same peaceful feeling as I did in other temples I’ve been to and been inside of. I don’t know if it was the volunteers there or something else but I felt like I was in the movie “Get Out.” I went to the open house with my fiancé and his mother, who are both African American. I am White Hispanic. Immediately I noticed the difference in treatment. While most volunteers gave warm, genuine smiles to me and held conversation with me, the moment my fiancé and mother-in-law went by, the smiles dropped to cautionary looks and there was silence. I also saw a group of young men being held up at the door on our way to watch the introduction video. They were also people of color and dressed in street clothes. They came as they were like advertised, but were held up. This also made me uneasy. There were only two or three volunteers who were welcoming to all three of us. The painting of the African American man with his presumably son right outside the baptismal font also disturbed me when I looked at it. Not only was it behind the door instead of being displayed openly, it just felt like a token piece amongst all the White portrayals of Jesus. My fiancé was excited to go here because I told him about my experiences in other temples and how overwhelmingly peaceful it is. He wanted to feel the same. Instead, he genuinely felt unsafe, so much so that he doesn’t want to step foot near a temple ever again. This is very much not what should be happening inside our temples. I pray that future open houses and temple workers ensure that there is true kindness and openness like I’ve been taught and felt my whole life in church.
