Should be 0 stars. This place is TERRIBLE, at least the memory care ward. Before moving in our family member with dementia, we specifically asked if Brookdale could handle a difficult resident with some behavioral issues. They assured us they could and that they were used to it. Not so! Our family member was there about 6 months. Brookdale was clearly understaffed, and some of the staff appeared to not want to work (we saw them sitting around on their phones during several visits). They sent our family member to the hospital at least 5 times during this 6 month period. These were not all emergencies. Brookdale did not want to deal with our family member, or did not have the staff to give our family member the care needed, so they sent our family member to the hospital to do it for them. Note that it costs around $1000 for the hospital to return the resident via ambulance, and you will receive this bill, unless you can find another means of transportation. Brookdale does not take this into consideration at all, despite the hefty fees you’re already giving them, and will keep sending them for things that could be handled at Brookdale. They have no qualms about wasting your money. Toward the end of our family member’s stay there, covid spread around the facility. Brookdale told us we needed to take our family member HOME, where they hadn’t lived in nearly 3 years, immediately, because Brookdale could not confine our family member to their room to keep them from spreading the disease. Brookdale said if we didn’t take our family member home, they would send them to the hospital AGAIN. It appeared Brookdale did not want to deal with our family member and was looking for a reason to kick them out. We were not equipped to take them home, especially at the drop of a hat, thus the reason our family member was in a facility in the first place, so back to the hospital it was. Then Brookdale tried refusing to take our family member back after covid cleared up. By law, facilities are supposed to give 30 days notice before evicting a resident. Brookdale did not give 30 days notice, and we had to involve a social worker in order for them to take our family member back. Our family member spent about 1 month in the hospital. More taxpayer dollars and hospital resources squandered on someone who was supposed to be in a facility we were still paying for this entire time. When Brookdale agreed to take our family member back, the condition was we had to pay an additional $1000 for Brookdale staff to check on our family member MORE OFTEN. We agreed, as we couldn’t find another facility at the time. Only a few DAYS after our family member’s return, our family member was sent back to the hospital for severe dehydration! Brookdale was not even meeting our family member’s basic needs while claiming they were giving them ADDITIONAL care. They did refund the $1000 after this incident. However, after that, until we moved our family member to another facility shortly thereafter, Brookdale required us to hire private duty to watch our family member every day, which adds up quickly. A private duty provider once found our family member sitting in their own filth. Apparently Brookdale staff would no longer be providing ANY care while private duty was around. The administrative staff was unpleasant to deal with. They always found excuses for their behavior or lack of care. Their bottom line is CYA. I would not be surprised if they replied to this review with excuses or fabrications. At least one of the administrative staff has stopped working there since then, and maybe things will improve, but I would NOT recommend sending your loved one there if you want them to receive even the basic level of care, based on our experience.
