My child attended Beginners Inn for approximately 2.5 years, starting around her first birthday. While we were really happy with this school initially, it has gone downhill very quickly and in some very concerning ways.
I believe the root of the problem is that the owners have not hired enough quality staff. The director, Elizabeth, left in the fall and was never replaced. Instead, one of the office staff (who also drives the buses) became the director. I'm not sure of her qualifications or experience.
As a result, the staff doesn't seem to have a lot of support or supervision. The old director used to assist in classrooms when needed, but now there's no one available to do that. When I drop off around 9am, there is almost never anyone at the front desk because the director is out doing bus runs. The owner, Michelle, is typically not around either. This makes me question the security of the facility – no one is watching who goes in or out.
When my daughter started in the preschool room, she had a really wonderful lead teacher and loved going to school. Unfortunately, this teacher left. In the absence of a lead teacher, another staff member filled in for 6 weeks. I only recently learned from another parent that this staff member was not even a teacher – she was originally hired as the cook.
The temporary "lead teacher" was awful. When I dropped my daughter off, she was usually sitting on a stool pointing at kids and telling them to be quiet or face forward – while doing nothing to engage them. Literally just expecting a room full of 3-year-olds to sit in silence. I escalated the problem when I witnessed her and her assistant yelling at kids one morning. The director did address this situation immediately by switching some of the staff around so there would be someone to keep an eye on the problematic teachers.
The owner also spent some time in the room trying to help. However, she pulled me aside one day and told me that the problems were caused by a misbehaving group of boys in the class. Her willingness to blame the problems on 3-year-olds confirmed my belief that few people at this daycare actually have expertise in child learning and development.
We thought things would improve when the new lead teacher was hired, but unfortunately this was not the case. The last straw was when I witnessed the teacher yelling at a young boy, THREE TIMES, while I was dropping my daughter off. I was horrified that she found this an acceptable way to behave in front of parents. I can only imagine what she does when parents aren't there. No wonder my daughter cried almost every morning at dropoff.
These were not the only problems we experienced. Our most consistent issue is that my fully-potty-trained child consistently came home in a pull-up, despite my repeated asks to put her back in underwear after naptime. There was even a week where they stopped putting her in a pull-up for naps and instead just sent home pee bedding and clothes for me to wash every night. The owner told me it's because putting pull-ups on and taking them off just takes too long.
We will not miss this center at all. It's unfortunate because it used to be really good. But if you want your child to be treated with kindness and respect, then this is not the place for them.
