If you care about your family member with Alzheimers and they are in need of rehab DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT put them at Brookdale Skyline rehab. In February of 2023 my 87 yr old stepmom, who at that point had been diagnosed with Alzheimers13 years earlier, suffered a significant stroke that affected her ability to walk (left side), but it did not effect her ability to speak. We thought because she was already in the Brookdale system we would put her at Skyline for rehab. Huge mistake, they are not setup to handle rehabbing Alzheimer patients who have experienced a stroke. After the stroke my stepmom was very scared ... she was in a new environment, away from her husband for the first time in 42 years, and not comprehending what had happened to her. If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimers you know that being in a familiar environment and sticking to a routine is essential to their well being. But instead of working with her and because of their profound inability to actually care for her and help her with that transition they isolated her in a room by herself, and then admitted to sedating her with multiple medications to "calm and control" her. My stepmom rarely takes medications so I'm sure between the stroke and effects of mutltple medications she was feeling very scared. After 3 weeks of her being overmedicated and isolated they told us she would never walk again and that we needed to move her to another facility within 4 days. Their social services was of absolutely no help and if anything deterred us from finding someplace for her quickly. When we requested for them to send her medical records over to a new facility they would mark them that she was "verbally abusive". They were the most uncaring individuals we have met since moving our parents to a care facility several years ago. We ended up moving her to Colonial Columns Nursing/Rehab Center. The care she has received there has been phenomenol!! The first thing they had to do was get her off all the medications Brookdale had doped her up with. Then they started her rehab, and since the first 3 critical weeks were wasted by Brookdale Skyline so they were basically starting from scratch a month after her stroke. We were fortunate that my stepmom is a strong stubborn German and that prior to the stroke she was still very active and went for walks multiple times a day. She is now in the Memory Care at Colonial Colums. She was flying around in a wheelchair around 6 months, and walking at around 12 months after the stroke. And they continue to work with her, she is still doing physical therapy to make sure she stays physically strong enough to continue walking and they have added occupational therapy and have stated her cognitive ability has improve immensely, which we never expected!!! But, I would agree, we actually had a somewhat normal conversation with her the other day. Don't let the pretty environment at Brookdale Skyline fool you into thinking your loved one with Alzheimers will receive top notch care there, unfortunately they will not and they may be detrimental to their ongoing health!! When you place your loved ones in a care facility we've discovered it's more about the staff and your loved one being in caring, loving environment....which she is now at Colonial!! They love her and she loves them. When she first arrived at Colonial and wasn't sleeping well one of the night staff brought her down to her work station in the evenings and kept her company until she was ready for bed. She has received a level of care at Colonial that she has not received at any other facility in town, and the rest of the staff has been amazing to work with! And If I could have given Brookdale Skyline a 0 stars I would have. HORRIBLE PLACE!!!
