RightStart™ Mathematics will help your child understand, apply and enjoy mathematics using games to learn concepts, strategies, and to practice math facts. This unique program uses visualization of quantities, de-emphasizes counting, and provides strategies (visual pictures) for learning the facts. Place value is introduced early to solidify the children’s understanding. The primary learning tool is the Cotter Abacus, a specially designed two-sided abacus that is kinesthetic and visual.
RightStart Math has been such a blessing to our family. We have used it for 4 years now, with my oldest child now in level D and my second child in level B. The lessons are laid out clearly with material lists and lesson goals at the top and useful tips and tricks in the margins. The warm-up for each lesson ties in to previous lessons in order to build on those skills, and the games allow for further practice. I love that worksheets are kept to a minimum (especially in the lower levels) but still used efficiently to practice more abstract concepts. It allows for a very well-rounded experience for different learning styles. The occasional inclusion of math history is also very interesting, especially to a history major like myself. But what really sets this curriculum apart is how math is taught as a language, with patterns, fun and practical applications, and just the inherent beauty of how we can see mathematical concepts all around us in our everyday lives and how it all ties together. Sure, the cost is higher up front because of the manipulatives, but it’s definitely more cost effective long term since the books and worksheets are cheaper than most other curricula. So using RightStart through all the levels pays off! To me, it’s totally worth the investment!

I am a former middle school resource and inclusion math teacher for 27 years. For the most part, the curriculum is good. Some of the instructions and explanations of lessons and games are not always clear. It takes me reading the material several times to understand.

I love this curriculum for my kiddos! It's so hands-on, the kids love it. I have a BA in Mathematics and even I am learning things in these lessons. They really put the sense of play into our learning, and I love it.
