- KHKen Vanden HoornJun 9, 20253.0A year ago, summer of 2024 Diamond Construction replaced all of the Barge Rafters on my two story house. Since I am still, June 2025, getting email request to give them a review, I guess I have no choice. I have been refraining from doing so since it will not be entirely favorable, but they insist. Perhaps this persistence is the first thing you should know. The owner came out, he is personable enough, we discussed the project and his cost estimate seemed reasonable compared to another I had received. He said his regular crew was already booked for most of the summer, but there were two previous employees that he would contact to see if they were available. So, this review is not about his current staff. The two he referred to were available and he brought them out. One turned out to be very intelligent, skilled, and a hard worker, I would hire him without question for many different projects, the other not so much. I wanted the new Barge Rafters painted before they went up, but the second didn’t even do that right, pretty much just a ‘go-fetch’ or hold up this end of the rafter for me person. I mentioned it is a two story house and of course some of the rafters were very high and others couldn’t be reached without walking all over my new two year old roof. I mentioned to the owner when he was out that it seemed we would need a lift to do the job properly, but he said lifts were expensive and there was a way to stack scaffolding to reach the higher ones, but I knew that would still mean walking on the roof for some of them. I discussed it with the ‘good’ helper and we agreed it really required a lift. He checked on the price and considering how much could be done in a day with one, it made complete sense to go that route. Of course, that cost came out of my pocket and saved Diamond money since the job got done more quickly. The ‘good’ one even figured out how to use the lift to get at the difficult rafters without getting on the roof. So, I don’t know about Diamonds regular staff, but I’m not sure the owner understood just how difficult part of the job would be to reach. Sorry Diamond, but you insisted.
