Devon has been our go to guy for over 8 years. We used him to remodel and fix our house during Harvey and continue to use him for roof inspections in our new home. He is a good honest guy and we recommend him to all our neighbors and friends! 💜
Frequently Asked Questions About Upper Hand Roofing & Construction
Do I need a WPI-8 Windstorm Certificate for my roof or siding replacement?
If you are located within a TDI catastrophe zone, you will need a WPI-8 windstorm certificate in order to maintain
windstorm insurance on the property. This not only applies to roofing but the entire exterior of your home like
windows and doors as well. The catastrophe zone is the area within roughly 30 miles of the coast but it varies.
Some of the counties in this zone are Harris, Refugio, Jefferson, Chambers, Brazoria, Matagorda, Calhoun,
Aransas, San Patricio, Nueces, Kleberg, Kenedy, Willacy & Cameron. Visit
https://www.tdi.texas.gov/wind/maps/index.html to check if your property is in one of these zones. This is
general information which changes on a continuous basis. Please contact the Texas Department of Insurance to
verify. Contact us for more information.
Do I need a WPI-8 Windstorm Certificate for my roof or siding repair?
Generally Repairs of less than 100sqft in size do not require a windstorm certificate but anything larger than that
will. This is general information which changes on a continuous basis. Please contact the Texas Department of
Insurance to verify. Contact us for more information.
What is the best type of attic ventilation? Are ridge vents better than static box vents?
Generally the most efficient type of ventilation for you attic will be solar attic fans. These fans use solar energy to
turn a motor that pumps ventilation through your attic. In Texas summers they will significantly drop the
temperature in your attic which will help you save money on your energy bill. The next best type of attic
ventilation would be ridge vents because they are at the highest points of your roof where the heat rises to and
accumulates. Some properties however don’t have enough ridge area or the attic configuration doesn’t allow
proper ventilation from ridge vents. In this case turbines or static vents would be an alternative solution. More
important than the type of vent you use is that the property has the correct amount of ventilation for the space.

Should I use blown in fiberglass insulation or spray foam insulation?
Spray foam insulation is generally more efficient of an insulation than traditional blown in fiberglass. This is in
large part because the foam expands into all of the tiny spaces creating a sort of seal in addition to adding the
insulating factor. However, spray foaming a house that wasn’t originally designed for it could lead you to major
problems in the future because spray foam doesn’t just replace one type of insulation for another, it completely
changes the technology of how the airspace in your home works. Generally with spray foam the attic space is
converted to a climate controlled space and without doing all of the necessary things to go along with it, you
could create a fire or carbon monoxide hazard by doing so. Contact us for more information.
Are laminate/laminated shingles better than architectural or 3-tab shingles? How about 25yr vs 30yr shingles?
To clear things up, 30 year shingles, laminate or laminated shingles & architectural shingles are all just different
names for the same product. Also, 20yr, 25 year shingles and 3-tab shingles are just different names for the
same product. Architectural shingles are much stronger, more durable, longer lasting and more resistant to wind
or storm damage than a 3-tab shingle. This is because of two main differences. For one, the architectural shingle
is laminated so it is essentially twice as thick with 2 layers laminated together. The second reason is that
architectural shingles are like one solid piece so in a storm, the wind is fighting to lift the entire shingle whereas
3-tab shingles have vertical cuts in the shingle separating it into 3 sections. When the wind blows a 3-tab shingle
is is much more easily damaged because it only has to lift 1/3 of the shingle.
Should I use Hardie Fiber Cement Siding, LP Smartsiding or Vinyl Siding?
There are pros and cons to each type of siding but in the majority of cases, we recommend a fiber cement siding
like James Hardie. For fiber cement siding, it is made of cement so it is virtually unaffected by water damage
which makes it ideal for our climate. The downsides to fiber cement are a slightly higher price, brittleness which
causes it to be chipped more easily and the concrete absorbs the moisture from the paint which can cause it to
need to be repainted more often. For Smartsiding which is a laminated wood based product, it is extremely
dense and resistant to impact so it is very difficult to scratch or chip. However as with any wood product, it can
be susceptible to water damage over time if it is not properly installed and maintained. Vinyl siding is the lowest
priced option and it comes pre-colored so there is no need to paint it which saves even more money. Vinyl siding
is basically made of a thin plastic so it is by far the weakest option that can handle the least amount of wind
resistance. Each property is different so please contact us with any questions and we can help guide you.
Can my roof be installed with nail guns or hand nails? How many nails per shingle?
If you are located in a catastrophe zone per the Texas Department of insurance, you should definitely have your
roof installed by hand nailing with a hammer and ensuring there are 6 nails per shingle. If you are not in a
catastrophe zone, you can get away with using nail guns and only putting 4 nails per shingle but we would not
recommend it. Those extra 2 nails per shingle increases your roofs ability to resist wind and we do not charge
any extra to install them. Nail guns can be used but they can decrease the quality of the fastener installation by
under driving them, over driving them or driving them in at an angle.
Should I use tar paper or synthetic as a roofing underlayment?
You should definitely use synthetic underlayment for many different reasons. It is lighter weight, it is much more
difficult to tear and it is much easier to remove next time you get a roof replacement. There is virtually no benefit
to installing traditional 15# or 30# felt paper.
Should I file an insurance claim?
If your property incurred accidental damage from fire, water, wind, hail or vandalism with the damage valued at a
higher amount than your deductible and you have the proper insurance coverage, you should almost always file
a claim. There are thousands of intricacies that could change this because every property and policy is different
so contact us for further guidance. Even if you know for sure you are going to file a claim, we strongly encourage
you to contact us first so we can help set you up for success through the claims process.
Can my insurance carrier raise my premiums for filing a claim?
In most cases with storm damage, it is deemed as an “act of god” that was unavoidable. Since there is nothing
you could have done to prevent it, your insurance company can not legally penalize you for filing a claim
therefore they can not raise your premium for doing so. They can however raise the rates for the entire zip code
based on the amount of risk they are taking on. With this being said, after a major storm your premium will most
likely increase regardless of whether you file a claim or not. Even if you know for sure you are going to file a
claim, we strongly encourage you to contact us first so we can help set you up for success through the claims
process.
