SDC brings intense attention to the detail of every project. With our solid background in construction management, general contracting, heavy industrial, concrete, and site preparation, we’ve carefully built a reputation for safety, innovative thinking, and outstanding quality. You could say that we have built our reputation from the ground up. With over three decades of experience in the art of general contracting, our team of professionals understands its complexities.
We Say It. We Mean It. We Prove It. Since our company’s founding in 1983, Smith-Doyle Contractors has been a leading force in construction with expertise in all construction areas. Contact us today to learn more.
If I could give zero stars, I would. Our experience working with Smith-Doyle (SD) as a subcontractor on a recent new construction project was nothing short of frustrating and professionally damaging.
SD demonstrated a lack of accountability across the board. They routinely blamed subcontractors—including us—for issues on the jobsite that were clearly due to poor oversight or coordination on their part. Their refusal to maintain a clean jobsite, coupled with the expectation that “everyone” was responsible (yet no one was held accountable), set the tone early on.
Communication was disorganized and inconsistent. Rather than proactively coordinating trades, SD would withhold direction or clarification until after work was complete, only to then claim it was done incorrectly and demand rework. There were repeated breakdowns in information-sharing between trades, causing delays, inefficiencies, and frustration.
We raised legitimate concerns—both about change orders and the conduct of their on-site supervisor—to SD’s upper management multiple times. Each time, our concerns were dismissed outright with no willingness to listen or problem-solve. Even more troubling, SD continuously requested cost-saving concessions from us, despite this being a fixed-fee project. It was clear they did not understand or respect the contract structure.
To make matters worse, when the project architect failed to include critical design elements, SD abdicated responsibility, pushing the burden onto subcontractors to resolve—not exactly the role a competent construction manager should take. And after the project closed out, we were blindsided by a significant back charge for work that wasn’t our fault.
This was not a collaborative project—it was an exercise in finger-pointing and deflection from day one. I would strongly caution any subcontractor or project stakeholder considering working with Smith-Doyle. In our experience, they failed to act in good faith, lacked professionalism, and created an adversarial environment that hindered progress rather than led it.
