- MSMary K. SkrabalSep 29, 20252.0The manufacturer of our water heater, A.O. Smith, contracts with Benjamin Franklin Plumbing so we had no choice but to use them to uninstall or new A.O. Smith water heater due to having problems with it, and install the replacement water heater. We tried to get a ballpark estimate over the phone for the work but the person my husband spoke to would not give him an answer. Since we had no choice but to use BFP, we asked them to come out. After looking at the job, we were given an estimate of approximately $600.00 for the work (about the same as what we paid for the new water heater). It took the plumber approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to uninstall the old one, and install the new heater. We did not need for him to take our old heater back to the store so we would not be charged the disposal fee. After an hour of work, we received a bill for $790.00. Included in this was also a $79.00 "service" charge that was added on. In our experience, service charges are usually included in the total bill if service is provided, otherwise you pay the service charge alone to cover the visit (which is understandable). The plumber was very professional and we were not upset with him at all. We understand he likely doesn't set the prices. The charge was absolutely unbelievable. We paid a local plumber to do the same work originally for less than $400.00. We understand larger companies can't meet local prices, but almost $800.00 for one hour of work? This is robbery. Again, we were forced to use BFP by A.O. Smith, now we have to hope that A.O. Smith will refund us this exorbitant cost for service.
